Wouldnt that still use alot of internet data though, especially if they are watching movies?

Is this set up anything like those ‘rabbit jacks’, those cheap USB looking things sold for $19.99 promising free unlimited tv?

No, you can literally do the DVR thing without an internet connection. Use the antenna for the content then plug that into the DVR and you don’t need internet. You can review what you’ve recorded.

That’s right. For a long time, being tech challenged, I thought that my brother’s Tivo setup was just a cheap cable package. But the Tivo provides no content whatsoever—just a DVR and the software to manipulate what is recorded. He has an internet connection separately—just internet connection, no TV or telephone package. The internet connection is one (name removed by moderator)ut to the Tivo, the antenna is another, so is a VCR and occasionally an Apple TV connection. He shows the grandkids free videos from youtube. He never streams movies; he borrows them free from the local library on DVD. He doesn’t pay for any content.

I tried doing that at my library, with some mystery science theater 3000 movies, which are all 1.5 hours long, but I noticed in my internet usage, it still used data to view the movie, would have been the same had I just watched it on Youtube.

Maybe Im doing something wrong?

I don’t know. If the movies are being viewed through a DVD player connected to a TV, I’m not sure why it would be using the internet. But, I’m pretty tech challenged myself.

On my own TV, I have a Roku box and use it to view free movies. But the Roku streams through the internet, so it does use internet bandwidth.

You viewed the movies at the library? With what? their computer? Or your phone/tablet?

If it was your device, did you turn on wifi at the library, or did you just use your phone’s data service?

What “internet usage” are you talking about? What monthly bill did you view to make this determination?
