A little girl asked me a question: “Is God inside my shadow because someone told me that God is always with me and being everywhere I go I can always see my shadow, I was thinking that my shadow must be God and this makes me feel safe. I really love my God.” and then she gave me a “Big Smile.”
And I looked at her and thought to my self’, "Shadow… God… Hmm… I don’t see the connection. God being all light and all… So, how does one answer a question like this? The girl is all of about six years old and starring at me waiting…
So, I said to her, "Well Vanessa, “No” God is not in your shadow but when you see your shadow then you can know that God is with you because your shadow can only be seen when your standing in the Light… and God is all Light.
And she looked at me with a somewhat bewildered look on her face and I’m thinking to myself, “I don’t know how to answer this question” but then she turned to me and said; “God is Good! I knew he’d keep me safe.”
“Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise.” … Psalm 8

After I answered the question, I felt as though I should have brought up her Guardian Angel.

However, many do not seem to believe in Guardian Angels… Why is that???

I can only remember one time the idea of guardian angels has ever come up either at school or church (both protestant). It was dismissed as a “maybe God assigns certain angels to people, but it really doesn’t matter.” I honestly don’t see it come up that much, so that could be the answer right there: it’s just not taught very often.

Kids come up with the darndest stuff, don’t they?

I’m not sure I would promote God being her shadow, though. What about on rainy days, cloudy days, or nights when there is no shadow? It would follow that God isn’t with her then. So I really wouldn’t go there.

I would just tell her that no, God isn’t in her shadow, but a shadow can certainly be a reminder to her that God is with her all the time.

Probably because no one likes to think about having a personal protector who now lets be honest here won’t save you from physical or even moral evil. Faith in a guardian angel won’t protect you from some street gang that decide to beat you up, or guide your way when you’re lost in a dangerous place, or appear to you when you’re at the moment of committing sin to remember about God. It’s just another layer of having a personal god that seems to fail every test the world puts on the idea.
