Evening all, my friend David was accepted by the Westminster Diocese last weekend - from what I understand, he begins seminary from September. I want to make him a little hamper of things that will be useful to him, but since he is the first seminarian I have ever known, I don’t have the foggiest idea what he might need on this journey! If anyone who has trodden this path already could give suggestions I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Sam.

Do you mean religious or practical things? As far as practial goes, socks, t-shirts, jammies, towels, I would think anything you would get for someone going away to college.

Religious things, depends on what he has. I would suggest first and foremost a nice journal so he can journal his journey, prayers, concerns. Does he have a favoriet Saint? Maybe a statue, or one of St. John Marie Vianney patron of Priests, a car visor clip or car rosary since he may be traveling.

I’m not sure who his favourite saint would be, but I could probably narrow it down to four: Pio of Pietrelcina, Josemaría Escrivá, Feichin, and Salanis. Of these I suspect he has all the writings of Josemaria and all the pictures of San Pio, which just leaves the lesser depicted saints.

I like the St John Marie Vianney idea - he does have a miraculous medal for the patron saint of priests, but I think that’s all. Will try to find something else of him.

The journal idea is great too, can see him making good use of that. What about books - is the recommended reading for the course provided or can I help him gather them in advance?

Thanks,

I don’t know much about the required reading. I think the Navarre Bible series is nice one of our seminarians was given a set, but it can be expensive, so if you opt for that you may want to do just the book on The GOspels and Acts. I think any book that he could bring to Adoration would also be nice. If there is a Catholic store near you, a gift certificate or gift card would be great, that way he could pick and choose what he needs/wants. God Bless you for your kindness towards him.
