A Little Question!

Hello everyone.

I’ve been studying Catholic literature for the past couple of months. I don’t know what the usual ‘simmering period’ is for most Protestants, but I’ve finally accepted that I really do want to join the Church. I just today bought my first Catechism and first NRSV Catholic Edition Bible.

I’ll be starting RCIA classes this fall after I go back to school. I don’t really know what’s after that, but I’ll see.

My ‘little question’ is about Rosary beads. I would like to acquire a Rosary sometime that I can wear around my neck and be able to just remove it without fiddling with a clasp. I’m looking for a less ‘jewelry’-esque one (a wooden bead and rope Rosary would be wonderful). Do you think 24 inches is long enough? I measured my head, it was just about 24 inches.

You measured your head? I’m a newbee,too! And I got a nice one at the gift shop at church. The question is do you plan to wear it as jewelry or actually use it? I see olat of gangsta types who just wear it like jewelry and somehow I’m offended by that. I don’t know. It just bothers me. I keep mine in a nice little box and only take it out when I use it.

I plan on using it. I would just like to always have this devotional tool with me whenever I might have use for it. I’m also a bit absent minded, so I think I’ll be able to make good use of it.

I’m also a little weirded out by its use as jewelry. I always thought it was meant as a devotional tool and not for fashion. Hence, why I’m looking for a more simple wooden bead and rope one rather than the ones with semi-precious stones. No rub to those of you who prefer a more jewelry-like Rosary, as long as it actually sees some action.

Welcome home!! So, with the cautions that Rosaries are not “jewelery” (and i think you realize that quite well), any 5-decade Rosary will likely fit around your head. Just make sure you’re measuring just the loop part

Good answer! Not that I’m all that. I actually made my first one. I have four of them now.I don’t know exactly how ‘legal’ it is but I keep one in my car.Ihave one in a seperate box for ‘Divine Mercy’, One in another little box for the 20 mysteries. And one for particular petitions when needed.This is the one I made.out of wooden beads and hemp twine. I often wonder if it’s acceptable to pray for ‘things’,but, I guess it’s OK because it’s generally stuff I need…and it’s almost to the letter when I receive it.But, mostly I use it for others.Although, if anyone else out there reading this knows is it acceptable to pray for people without their knowledge or permission? WOW! I figured out how to use the little smileys

ABSOLUTELY!!! Sometimes I think that’s the most effective way. Some people might just harden their hearts and resent you praying for them.

To the original poster there are many styles of rosaries that are wearable without having to wear the whole thing around your neck. There are rings and bracelets for example or you could even do what I often do which is just count on your fingers. I mainly count on my fingers when I pray in public places like on the train so that I can concentrate without people staring at me. If you want to wear something to show your new faith, and remind you to pray, get a nice crucifix or medal.

As for praying for people without their knowledge or permission I do it all the time! I think sometimes our paths cross with people because God wants us to pray for them. For example on one flight i had I was seated at the back of the plane by the window and by the opposite window they had folded the seats over and suspended a stretcher onto which they brought a woman who lay there for the whole 12 hour flight. Needless to say I said a bunch of prayers for her, even praying a chaplet of divine mercy on my fingers for her. That is an extreme example but I also pray for people who annoy me or that kind of thing.
