Thinking rationally, why does a god have to be ‘loving’?
What if a god didn’t care very much about anything other than himself? There might not even be an afterlife, in that bleak scenario.
Is a god’s ‘lovingness’ required for us to exist?

Well, if God is perfect, then wouldn’t His attributes have to be perfect as well?
How could an attribute of selfishness or indifference be a quality of perfection?

Well, a passive God wouldn’t create human life.

A hateful God who created us to torture us… sure, he could exist, but he’s doing a pretty bad job.

A loving God who created us, and then gave us free will in order that we might enter into the fullest relationship possible with Him, makes the most sense, don’t you think

No. God could simply be an impersonal force. Revelation tells us about the love.

God cannot be thought of as an indifferent God, because he will’s us into existence and sustains us in existence. In other-words, God is sharing existence with us. Thus his indifference would not make rational sense.

No , @sonofbarry , a god does not have to be loving .

But God has to be loving because God is love , so he can’t be otherwise .

But not loving in an anthropomorphic sense , but loving in a divine sense …wide and long and high and deep …which surpasseth all knowledge .

“What if” questions always have a sad or evil end point.

God is loving because God is love.

Simple as that. He, the source of love, knows that love must be given in complete freedom. That freedom carries risks - even that we reject God. Yet, He prizes freedom so much that He grants us the freedom to choose evil over Him.

Freedom.

It’s a wonderful thing.

There’s one verse - in the New Testament - that has always astounded me -

" God is Light "

I have thought about this verse - many times - and always end up smiling.
There is - no darkness - in Him - at all -
I have read of people who have died ( and came back etc )
and they say they were walking or going - into this bright white light !
