A Maronite Catholic parish in Greenville, SC? Are you kiddin' me?

ive got a good friend who will become a Maronite priest, they are looking to start a parish in baton rouge.

Well, it is apparently the only ECC in SC.
They list 2/25/01 Feast of St. Maron Mass celebrated by Msgr. Ron Beshara with first community Baptism and Chrismation. I can’t see in their history when they first celebrated Mass. Maybe: 10/31/99 First Maronite Tradition Day held at St. Mary’s Church at 3pm with over 250 people in attendance. Msgr Ron offers the mass and there is a reception afterwards.
250 was a big turn out!

Some Melkites meet at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Charleston.

Some Byzantine Catholics meet at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Since the Charleston and Myrtle Beach groups are not listed on the “find-a-parish” if you could share whatever info you have with the “find-a-parish” site Neil will probably be grateful to have it and post it. 🙂
 
I received a PM that “the Melkite Mission in SC is suppressed and has been for several months; the Byzantine Mission in SC meets 3x yearly only (principally serves a summer population), altho Bishop William is reportedly considering whether there is enough interest for it to be more formally established.”

Via the Diocese website I see The Melkite Greek Catholic Community of Charleston, SC has been closed by decree of Archbishop Cyril S Bustros effective 19 April 2010.

Prayers for both groups.

All we need is an Orthodox in union with Orthodoxy to round it out.

Bishop William purchased a complex with a house and 2 outbuildings and several acres of land this past spring. The members of the community have done the work to refurbish one of the out buildings and have converted it into a chapel complete with ikonostas.

They are awaiting a decision on a bi-ritual priest to come and have Divine Liturgy on Saturday evenings. The community has between 50 and 75 members already who are FULL TIME residents of the area, NOT part of the summer crowd.
 
Wow. That’s surprising.

I’d love to go to a Maronite parish. As Aramaic is Christ’s native tongue. Sadly, the closest one is almost an hour away.

For me, the nearest Maronite parish is over 1500 miles… quit complaining! You’ve got one in driving range!

My bad for presuming folks would know that SC ain’t exactly a hotbed of Roman Catholicism, much less Eastern Catholicism.

We have families that drive 45-90 minutes each Sunday to attend Divine Liturgy:D
