Hello everyone. I wanted to find a list of all the earliest quotes or allusions to the Gospels (I also included Papyrus from the 2nd century) but I couldn’t find a compilation of them all in one area with the respected passages, so I took it upon myself to gather all of my favourites and put them here on CAF. I’m focusing on anything that came out of the late 1st and 2nd century, in order. I tried my best not to skip anything but if there’s anything I missed that would be deemed valuable, feel free to post.

The Didache. Some date it as early as 50ad while others say very early in the first century. Regardless, it has many quotes that are now Scripture. (Mostly Matthew)

Didache1:2 The way of life is this: First, you shall love God who made you. And second, love your neighbor as yourself, and do not do to anotherwhat you would not want done to you.
Luke 16:31Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Didache1:3 The meaning of these sayings is this: Bless those who curse you, and pray for your enemies,

I want to end with Irenaeus, who quotes Scripture like crazy and took a lot of effort for me to gather as much as possible from him. There’s a good chance I missed much. Feel free to add anything I missed by anyone.

but my feeling of affection prompts me to make known to you and all your companions those doctrines which have been kept in concealment until now, but which are at last, through the goodness of God, brought to light. For there is nothing hidden which shall not be revealed, nor secret that shall not be made known.

They maintain also, that these thirty Æons are most plainly indicated in the parable of the labourers sent into the vineyard. Chapter 2

The production, again, of the Duodecad of the Æons, is indicated by the fact that the Lord was twelve years of age when He disputed with the teachers of the law
Luke 2: 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.

And, in like manner, they assert that the ten Æons are pointed out by the letter Iota, which begins His name; while, for the same reason, they tell us the Saviour said, One Iota, or one tittle, shall by no means pass away until all be fulfilled.
Matthew 5: 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Chapter 3

The same thing is also most clearly indicated by the case of the woman who suffered from an issue of blood. For after she had been thus afflicted during twelve years, she was healed by the advent of the Saviour, when she had touched the border of His garment; and on this account the Saviour said, Who touched me?

Mark 5:30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”

They then represent the Saviour as having indicated this twofold faculty: first, the sustaining power, when He said, Whosoever does not bear his cross (Stauros), and follow after me, cannot be my disciple; and again, Taking up the cross, follow me;

Luke 14:27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
but the separating power when He said, I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

They also maintain that John indicated the same thing when he said, The fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge the floor, and will gather the wheat into His garner; but the chaff He will burn with fire unquenchable.

Luke 3:16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with** water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”**
 
Chapter 4

For these doctrines are not at all similar to those of which our Lord said, Freely you have received, freely give.

Chapter 7

They maintain that he is the centurion mentioned in the Gospel, who addressed the Saviour in these words: For I also am one having soldiers and servants under my authority; and whatsoever I command they do.

Matthew 8:9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

Thus, when He said, My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me? He simply showed that Sophia was deserted by the light, and was restrained by Horos from making any advance forward.

Matthew 27: 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
Her anguish, again, was indicated when He said,My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death;

they declare that He indicated when He said, that He had come after that sheep which had gone astray.

Luke 15: 4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
They say, too, that Simeon, who took Christ into his arms, and gave thanks to God, and said, Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word,

Her name, too, was indicated by the Saviour, when He said, Yet wisdom is justified by her children.

Luke 7: 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.

And he expresses himself thus: In the beginning was the Word, and theWord was with God, and the Word was God; the same was in the beginning with God.

John 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 The same was in the beginning with God.

For he styles Him a light which shines in darkness, and which was not comprehended

John 1: 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

and the Word made flesh, whoseglory, he says, we beheld; and His glory was as that of the Only-begotten (given to Him by the Father), full of grace and truth.
(But what John really does say is this: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us; and we beheld His glory, the gloryas of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1: 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

This has been exhausting. I’ll be back hopefully to complete soon!

Also, I recognized I left out a quote already and I don’t have the patience to go back and find it Lol. Irenaeus quotes, “bring peace but a sword” in one of his books. So keep in mind that there may be little errors here and there.
