A Medjugorje handkerchief

Probably this is not a good question, but the doubt is still on my mind. Today after Mass someone has given me as a gift a small handkerchief with the image of a crucifix and Blessed Mary on it and the quote from Medjugorje apparition “If you knew how much I love you, you would cry with joy.”
The last time I checked, that was an unapproved apparition and there were some controversies around it, yet no official words have been pronounced for or against it. Is it good to keep the handkerchief? As long as it serves a purpouse of piety, I guess?

I see no harm at all in keeping it. You were wise enough to investigate whether or not the apparition was approved, and you’re not taking it as gospel truth. We believe in Our Lady’s love for us, so the message printed on it isn’t against Catholic teaching. Do what you want with it, you’re not obligated either to keep it or throw it away.
 
Someone gave me one as well. I thanked her for thinking of me, took it home and burned it (in case it had been blessed).
 
No, or at least nothing that my post would allude to. Blessed items are disposed of by either breaking them into pieces and burying them or by incineration. Since I didn’t know if the handkerchief had been blessed, I chose to be cautious and burned it.

Accept it as a gift. Nothing more. Medjugorje is not recognised by the church. I know some priests who go there that find it extremely spiritual.

Haha no I understood about trying to dispose of a possibly blessed object, I was just wondering if there was a reason everyone was getting rid of it, other than simply not wanting it
 
I can’t speak for others. I just didn’t want it, and my two options were disposal or giving it to someone else. I wasn’t about to do the latter.
 
I have looked at loads of videos of the place. I am very skeptical but am open minded too.

At a church not far from my parish, there’s a lady who periodically distributes devotional articles related to an apparition the Church has actually denounced (I can’t recall which) just outside the doors. The pastor is a friend of mine; he thankfully doesn’t allow her to hand anything out inside the church. Anyway, I accepted her handouts once because I didn’t know what it was. As soon as I found out, it was bonfire time.

I am not totally closed to the possibility, but until the Church rules in its favor I want nothing to do with it.

This small town has made a lot of money out of this apparition … I’m not buying into it.

Oh wow! It’s a good thing your pastor noticed this and is taking measures to protect his flock!
 
The priest wasn’t and isn’t my pastor - this isn’t happening at my parish. (He’s actually my pastor’s twin brother. Yeah, my life is weird. 😁) But he’s really careful about this kind of thing. I’m very comfortable in his parish because I’m completely confident that nothing hinky ever goes on there.

Sadly, he can’t prevent her from distributing these articles outside the church but he’s adamant she refrains from doing so inside it.
 
Whoops, should’ve read that more closely! That’s an interesting dynamic, twin brothers, both priests in nearby parishes.

I would’ve hoped his warning her would’ve been enough to convince her not to do it at all :confused:
 
I know so little about Medjugorje. I liked other apparitions so much better that I never paid much attention to it, and all the controversy just made me skeptical of it.

However I don’t have any explanation for the rosary thing, that’s just weird.
 
Mary no doubt loves us. I don’t see any harm in keeping it, or “re-gifting” it to someone with an interest in such matters (preferably someone who is well aware that Medjugorje is still being examined by the Vatican).

If it said something contrary to Catholic teaching, such as “Vatican II was a grave mistake”, I’d throw it out.
