Same with the Soviet National Anthem. Too bad, really. When they raise the anthem in The Hunt For Red October, I halfway feel like a Soviet myself. Same way when all of Rick’s Cafe sings Le Marseillaise in the face of the German colonel in Casablanca, I feel like a proud Frenchman.
As we were singing some wonderful Eastern Catholic carols last Nativity season someone pointed out that they come from Slovakian and Ukrainian drinking songs. 😃

That’s not actually the only time in history that one tune was applied onto another music. The tune in which Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence is sometimes sung (NOT in Byzantine Chant, mind you) was actually taken from the French carol Picardy. The tune of The Star-Spangled Banner itself has it roots from a drinking song!

Luther must be doing full back-flips in his grave right now that Papists are singing his hymns. 😃
No more so than he would that “Papists” now have vernacular Masses, communion in the hand, Mass on tables, facing the people, and a host of other Protestant practices that were demanded by the “reformers”, rejected under the holy Council of Trent, then introduced into the Church in the wake of Vatican II. :bigyikes:
