Hello there, I am a new user in this forum because I kind of struggling with my faith. I am baptized as a Catholic and proud of it (and an anime fan, my username tells it), and firmly believe in Jesus, but I rarely went to church even though I frequently beg my over-protective parents to go to mass, but they never do.

I did my RCIA and had my first confirmation, communion and confession a few years ago but I fell out and I felt disappointed, save for going to church a few times.

I wanted to use this year’s Lenten season to put back in my faith. During the communion, I made a grave minor mistake by trying to grab the bread from the deacon (?) and I did not consume it on the spot. The person asked me if I am Catholic (which I said yes) and he said I’m not supposed to consume it once I leave, and I felt very embarassed a bit and ashamed of myself, and I did not intend to do it, just a mess-up. I already apologized to The Lord for the mistake I made. I was wondering what I can do better since I wanted to become a good Catholic (I do accept the social teachings of the church, like with marriage and abortion). I have the urge to pray more too for this season.

Also I would like to get some good resources on Cathecism and how I can initiate Confession too. I feel like my spiritual life is in the balance.

Go to confession if you want to get back into things.
Then perhaps at the end of Lent you may decide you want to be confirmed. Speak to someone at your parish to see what that would entail.

Always eat the host as soon as it’s handed to you. Also do not grab it from the person distributing communion. You approach. They will then say “The body/blood of Christ.” You then respond “Amen,” and have your hands cupped for them to place the host into them.

Do you still have the host that you walked away with?

Incidentially, just so you know, you do not need to confess your mistake at Communion, since it was a mistake and you had no intention to do anything wrong. It is however usual to think of it in terms of “recieving” Communion, rather than “doing” or “grabbing” it.

Your parish probably has a website. If your parish has scheduled open periods for people to come to Confession, it is usually posted on the website. If not, call the parish office to ask. Your parish will have “Confessionals,” booths or rooms where Confession is held during those times.

If you haven’t been to Confession in a while, or if you just prefer to do it this way, you can also call the parish office and request an appointment for Confession.

I did not have the host with me, I already consumed it right after the deacon told me I’m not suppossd to take it.

I will look for the next available time (I have a busy schedule) to go to confession at my parish.

Pro-tip: Some parishes have long lines for Confession (some don’t). If it’s possible, and your parish has limited times, I suggest getting there a little before Confession is scheduled so you can get a good spot if there’s a line.

Maybe that’s not an issue where you go.

. . . . You first need to go to confession, be absolved and then you can go to communion. Do not receive again until you have been to confession. You should confess that you did receive while not in a state of grace, although the manner is not the issue.

Be in peace and keep going to Mass every week. You can go and not receive until you can make a good confession.

My freind, from reading your post, It seems clear God is drawing you closer to Him. Its not your fault for the mistake at communion, one of the reasons you have to receive before you walk away is to prevent the host from being stolen for sacrilegious purposes, or from someone putting if in their pocket for later etc. The person was right to correct you on that, dont take it hard .

My advise to you, learn the short prayers , act of faith hope and chaity and say them every morning along with your morning offering, try to make an effort to do some spiritual reading everyday, lifes of saints etc.

The YouTube channel Sensus fidelium. Has exellent sermons from good preists that theach the faith.

Thanks for all of the responses! I came from a “religiously dysfunctional” family since my parents talk about God, Jesus, Mary and the Saints a lot but never have the impetus to go to mass every Sunday for made-up reasons, and my younger siblings aren’t even interested and I am the only one in my immediate family being vocal about it. I also have a mild case of autism with a set of problems that lead me to being in a state of mortal sin and I want to rediscover my faith more this Lenten season, the first thing being heading to Confession as soon as possible (this Saturday). I’m currently reading over this year’s Best Lent Ever and the Catechism lectures by Fr. Mahan on Youtube.
