A real warning…this account is very graphic indeed and is a medical account based on what the Gospels tell us, and I have hesitated indeed before posting it…and it does contain some quite disturbing diagrams…please don’t read it unless you are prepared to be disturbed. Roman crucifixion was horrific.

…Jesus would have been familiar with Roman crucifixion as it was quite common in His day…it certainly more than accounts why He asked His Father to let the cup pass if it was His Will and why He sweated drops of blood knowing what lay ahead of Him…

It more than demonstrates that Jesus endured the worst of human sufferings…far beyond my ability to imagine with my own meagre sufferings paling into complete and total insignificance so as not to exist at all. Putting it into the context of this is what sin has done, sin becomes something unimaginably horrific. I am left with knowledge that I do not understand at all the true horror of what sin actually is.

I will be posting into another thread in this Spirituality Forum a reflection by Fr. Ron Rolheiser on the the more moral, mental and emotional side of the Passion and the perspective of Jesus we can deduce from The Gospels.

I try to check my source before posting any article etc., but sometimes I can come adrift. I anyone sights that something in the above is not in accord with Catholic teaching, please advise and I will have the information above deleted.

Thank you, Barbara, for posting that article. I printed it out to read tomorrow, Good Friday.

It caught my eye because I just read about the French woman, Chantal Sebire, who had severe facial tumors and wanted to die…and did just die…but they are not sure of cause yet.

“A French woman severely disfigured by facial tumors has been found dead just two days after a court rejected her request for an assisted suicide.”

And that has rekindled the euthanasia debate.

As bad as it was for her, I’m sure it was nothing compared to the crucifixtion of Jesus. I feel such sorrow for her, however. And, seeing that you are a “prayer warrior” please pray for her.
 
Wow, thank you for posting this. I just cannot imagine the sheer terror and horror He went through - willingly - for us. It makes me appreciate even more what He had endured. Thanks Barbara for sharing this link.

I must confess, I found Good Friday’s 3pm service hard to take (It was my first) and I took the first opportunity to get out of there because I found it so hard to imagine what He was going through on the cross. For the rest of that day I kept kicking myself for doing it - if He can die for me, the least I can do is watch.

I’m so glad you posted this - you gave me a chance to make amends. It’s not easy to read, but since when was anything worth doing ever easy?

Please don’t feel alone. I, and I am sure many others too, find Good Friday difficult. In fact, by the time the Vigil Mass is concluded Easter Saturday night I am totally exhausted and drained and this can last for weeks after Easter when I feel anything but a disposition to rejoice…I just want to feel back to normal again. My one cause for joy is that now the whole horror of it all is past tense for Jesus. The article that is the subject of this Post is absolutely disturbing to my mind and I still find it overwhelmingly difficult to read. For this reason I have never seen Mel Gibson’s movie on the Passion of Christ…as the way I am “made up” it would be far too much for me I think. Roman crucifixion was absolutely horrific to say the least. We are all different and our reactions to any given matter can be almost multitudinal and I dont think there is a right or wrong reaction almost ever - within reason of course which common sense will dictate.

I’d seen a few documentaries about the medical and realities of crucifixion before, all very much like this news story. None of what was said in this story surprises me. It actually seemed pretty objective and unbiased which made it easier for me to read than watch “The Passion of The Christ”, which I finally did watch last year. That movie troubled me more than anything I’ve ever seen. I know Jesus’ death was awful, bloody and horrendous, but I didn’t think we needed to be so blatantly reminded. Of course, I’m Catholic and know what it was like just based on the gospel reading of the passion during services on Good Friday, learning about it in Catholic school and by participating in the Stations of the Cross. Our faith has taught us that. What surprised me most about the reaction to that movie was how so many non-Catholic Christians revered it and praised it as if it was the first time they’ve seen it before. So many times we get criticized for our portrayals of Christ’s death on the Cross, and how we don’t recognize that He’s risen because all we have in our churches and around our necks is Jesus on the Cross. Sometimes I wonder if they realize that if he hadn’t taken up that Cross for us and died that horribly, bloody, awful death, he never could have Risen for us.

Just my thoughts, for what it’s worth. Maybe naive. Maybe not.

Thank you for sharing, Mia. There are just so many aspects of the death and resurrection of Jesus…and the fact of his terrible death is one, and meditating on this one aspect introduces many things that are valid and important. I have never seen The Passion of Christ and with my constitution I doubt I could sit it through, but that does not mean that it has real value and validity for someone else, nor does it mean that at some future point I may indeed see the movie and be wonderfully enriched by it.
The cross I think is central to our Faith and our ‘emblem and standard’ because without the cross there is no resurrection. It was through the obedience of Jesus even unto death on a cross and a terrible death that God has raised Him from the dead …Blessings - Barb

I totally appreciate where you’re coming from. I totally resisted seeing it and am not recommending you go see if it for those very reasons. I had a very hard time watching it and probably never will again. You’re right, it has a place and a value. One thing, it can teach a lot of non-Catholic Christians about our faith. A colleague of mine raved about it. When I watched it on HBO or Showtime, it was like going to Mass in a way, though, I must admit I prefer sitting in the pews myself, 😉

Thank you for this information. I preach missions during lent and one of my talks is on the crucifixion. I will use this to augment the information I have. I have it bookmarked for ready reference.

Barb, thanks for this warning so I know not to read it. I cannot stand watching any Passion movie. Once I showed my CCD class a video for teenagers that is actually nothing compare to lot of other Passion movies. After the film was shown, the entire class was quiet. I asked them how they felt. They said it was sad. When I responded with “Yeah, that’s sad,” I just couldn’t help break down and cried. I have never watched Mel Gibson’s Passion, I know I could not survive with it.

But it is good just by reading your warning. It is a reminder again how much sufferings Jesus endured for me. It is a reminder not to sin, not even to the slightest sin. To be reminded of the Lord’s suffering should always bring us new and firm resolution not to sin; otherwise, it defeats the purpose.

I find it so bizarre that many of us (myself included) can barely watch realistic scenes of what Jesus went through, but we really have no trouble sinning at all - so, basically, we’re pretty okay with what we do to Jesus, but we just cannot watch. Well, of course, we’re sorry for what we’ve done, but while we’re doing it, it’s easy to dismiss the cruelty we inflict on Jesus. And I’m the first to do it. How humiliating. I always wonder if we’ll ever “see” what we “did” to Jesus just in our own individual lifetime.

A terrible thought to contemplate!..if we truly realized what sin is I am sure we would be just as overwhelmed if not moreso than any depiction or account of crucifixion …thank you for sharing this …
