I’d love to hear everyone’s interpretation of Judges 11 in relation to what happened to Jephthah’s daughter.
As far as I know - there are 2 prevailing interpretations of the “sacrifice”:
1.) Jephthah commissioned his daughter to a sacrifice of physical death - as a burnt offering.
2.) Jephthah commissioned his daughter to perpetual virginity and solitary confinement as an offering to God.
Does your church teach one or the other?
The LDS Church teaches the 2nd interpretation in seminary (all LDS high schoolers go to seminary), although, there are LDS members who think physical death is just as acceptable an interpretation.
I was taught the first interpretation in Catholic school.
In the scheme of things, the purpose of the lesson is not diminished one way or the other.
So, what were you taught regarding this chapter?
