A Muslim Rosary / Prayer Beads Question

I have seen in the movies and wondered about these Muslim Rosaries I’ve seen men praying with.

I wonder, especially because they seem move from one bead to the next so quickly, what the prayer is behind it.

Is it one prayer repeated over and over like the Eastern Catholic’s Jesus Prayer or is it made up of several prayers and/or meditations as is the Roman Catholic Rosary?

Anyone who knows, please fill me in. Thanks!
 
Prayer beads, or masbaha, are more than something to keep idle hands busy or to dangle from the rear-view mirrors of cars, they are used as a tool by which Muslims perform the dhikr, or pronouncements in remembrance of Allah as instructed by the Holy Qur’an.

Essentially, the rope of prayer beads is a kind of abacus used to help memorize verses from the Qur’an or more commonly to keep track of the recitation of the 99 names of God. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims’ intimacy with their prayer beads gets closer.

So would it be correct to say that the Masbaha has 99 beads and on each bead is recited one of Allah’s names? “Most Mercifiul”, etc.?

That’s at least one way they’re used - there would appear to be others as well.

Greetings.

The main use of prayer beads in Islam is in reciting the 99 names of God (link). Also they’re sometimes used to say subhanallah (exalted is God), alhamdulillah (all the praise is for God) and allahu akbar (God is great) 33 times each. So yes what we say is a lot shorter than say a Hail Mary, so that’s why we move through the beads quicker.
