I wasn’t being defensive, but it seems like you are. All I was saying (at first) is that’s its stupid to restrict girls and women from wearing pants. Didn’t say squat about the punishment, much less defend it. Seriously? Boggles the mind.
All I saw was your question about catholic school girls.

To me that sounded more like a justification of islamic dress code.

And yes pants are not allowed because the reveal the shape of the body underneath, also because pants are a male vestment and islam prohibits males and females from wearing each others outfits.

Eh? Do you find girls wearing dresses in Pakistan without pants underneath? No, the standard outfit is to wear a suit, which you surely know consists of both loose-fitting pants and a long tunic.

Seldom does a day go by that I don’t wear pants. I might wear something over them too, but still–Islam doesn’t prohibit pants. (Unlike some Christian school administrations, however.)

Actually the “standard” outfit in public is a burkha, but under that most women wear a salwar kameez or suit.

Care to address the issue of men and women dressing alike, I remember reading a fatwa on fatwaislam.com that said something to that effect.

fatwaislam.com/fis/index.cfm?scn=fd&ID=219

Well that particular fatwa doesnt address “dressing alke”.

Anyway dressing alike is addressed somewhere, I will find it.

Uh… perhaps you could reproduce it because that one certainly disagrees with what you’ve said so far.

Moreover, wearing “pants” doesn’t imply that one is dressing like a man. It’s common in many cultures for both men and women to wear pants, though usually in a different kind of style and fashion, so they aren’t imitating each other.

Dragging up random fatwas from the depths of the internet won’t do much to bolster your case, either.

Since, like I said, in much of the Muslim world it’s extremely common for women to wear pants in a suit–even if they wear a burqa or a jilbab or an abaya over it. Check out an Islamic fashion site, like shukronline.com. Some of their models are wearing pants with a long shirt and nothing over that. And I seriously doubt anyone would confuse them for men.

But if you wear one of those over your pants, your pants are merely undergarments, and the function of not showing the outline of your body is performed by that garment.

No one said that trousers are forbidde, just as garterbelts aren’t forbidden.

They just cant be the outermost clothing you wear in public.

Did anyone say that the video was about Islam? I didn’t say it. And I didn’t see anyone else say it.

Edited to add–Okay, Melkite made that mistake. But, eh, how’s he supposed to know any better?
Yes, I’m one of those Stupid Islamophobic Bigots who are trying to Spread Division on this Board…Shame On Me.

Yes, Islam is really a Harmless Religion Hijacked by a Few Fanatics and so on and so on…Gotcha.👍

Those Hadiths and Islamic Law, plus Passages in the Quran themselves that in one way or another condone this are not REALLY about Islam. Gotcha again, Amy.

Ultimately, it is MY OPINION. You disagree with it, fine. But deal with it. 😊

Actually, I was kind of liking the Discussion you and Algebra were Having. How about continuing it? I have a feeling we’re both too “entrenched” in our positions about Islam to have any kind of back and forth between both of us. 👍

Lots of crazy stories like this one seem to come out of the Sudan. I feel so bad for this lady, and also of course the Christians and animists in the south of the country. Really, for the entire country, since everybody suffers no matter what her religion with such barbarians in power. Such a sad state for a land that was once home to the proud and strong Christian kingdom of Nubia. I hope that the Southern Sudanese will vote for independence in their referendum to finally be rid of the tyranny of forced Arabization and Islamization coming from Khartoum.

I have actually seen a lot of footage of the SPLA (South Sudanese resistance) and other factions featuring women in leadership positions (leading regiments, shooting practice, etc). They may not be allowed to wear trousers, but they can sure shoot guns!

Condone what? Beating a woman for wearing pants? Go read the Quran and tell me where it says that. Or don’t, and believe me that it doesn’t say that.

There’s no justification for those idiots, and I’m not about to let anyone’s ignorance attempt to show them as anything other than horribly misguided.

For everyone’s information:

Wearing trousers is prohibited in Islam (at least in Saudi Arabia and other Sharia countries), that is based on many Fatwas by our Saudi clerics including this Fatwa which clearly defines the proper dressing for woman which should not include trousers unless it was worn under the woman normal dress (i.e., two levels of dresses).

That Fatwa is based on this hadith by Muhammed:
Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 32, Number 4087:
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) cursed the man who dressed like a woman and the woman who dressed like a man.

Interesting that you quote fatawa (rulings) by Salafi ‘scholars’ who are a heretical group and not part of ahul Sunnah wal jamat, therefore their rulings are false because they have no authority (i.e. they have no chain of narration from Muhammad (pbuh) to the present day). Thats like blaming the Pope for not allowing blood transfusions (re: JW beliefs). Tell me where in the most authoritative work in the Hanafi Madhhab (rite) Radd al Mukhtar does it mention that wearing trousers is punishable in a court of law? Or any authoritative work in either the Maliki, Shaf’i or Hanbali Schools (Like ibn Qudama, Salafis aren’t Hanbali’s). Where? It is true that men should not dress as women and vice versa (actually whats that got to do with trousers?) but are all sins punishable in a court of law? Since when?
Also are Catholic teachings really all that different? “A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.” (Deut 22:5). Even if this is no longer applicable (I’m in the process of studying Medieval Law), then is it really evil and can you really put any blame on us?
Your Pope - a great man - has continued the sentiments of Vatican II for working for mutual understanding, how does anything on this thread try and achieve that?
If we are going to point to bits of history and scraps of evidence and then say that defines all as something (which is blatantly false) then we can say that since members of the first Crusade ate the buttocks of dead Muslims and since Christians have the body and blood of Christ during the Eucharist then all Christians are cannibals, just like the Greko-Romans thought during the apostolic era. Clearly such an argument is false, so if its false to launch an argument like this for Christians then why is it not false for Muslims? Do unto others?

Hi Men0wjv,the Deuteronomy example you have given is not a Catholic teaching. It never originated from Catholicism. I never heard anyone think otherwise…till now.

As for blood transfusions, we Catholics have explained time and time again for more than 160 years, JW’s are a heretical sect (and offshoot of an offshoot etc) who don’t even believe in the Trinity. (The basis of true Christianity).

I’m not hear to start an argument, at all. My point really was, is it ok to just flick through another’s religious book or teachings with no knowledge and then come up with something and then blame the other for it? I’m trying to show what folly such thinking is.

That said, how sure are you? Does that mean men can dress like women etc? I did remember when George Bush and his wife Laura visited the Pope recently, she wore a dress and a headcovering at the request of the Vatican. A quick skim on the net also suggests that this carries some weight (I got the quote as a proof from Catholicplanet.com). Anyway, I’m not an expert and like I said I’m not trying to start an argument, but I think we should have complete knowledge of our own faith before we start launching into arguments with others. Seems fair right?

On a side point in Summa Theologica II-CLXIX-II, Aquinas writes:

As stated in the foregoing Article, outward apparel should be consistent with the estate of the person, according to the general custom. Hence it is in itself sinful for a woman to wear man’s clothes, or vice versa; especially since this may be a cause of sensuous pleasure; and it is expressly forbidden in the Law (Dt. 22) because the Gentiles used to practice this change of attire for the purpose of idolatrous superstition. Nevertheless this may be done sometimes without sin on account of some necessity, either in order to hide oneself from enemies, or through lack of other clothes, or for some similar motive.
Like I said are we really that dissimilar?

Exactly 👍 that is my exact point. Is it fair to blame ‘the Muslims’ for fringe groups that are rejected as false for being heretical?

I think that all religions, christianity included, are guilty of forcing their views on others, when they can get away with it. To “defend” such actions by your particular affiliation as being done by “fringe” or “heretic” types is outrageous. Whipping a woman in public like this is disgusting and satanic. No one deserves this kind of treatment, even if they are “wrong!” There should be no buts about it. By their silence, many “good” muslims do seem to support this kind of thing. It is hard to tell what they “officially” teach as so many of them contradict one another, and like other religions, including “christian” ones, they have many marvellous excuses to reason away behaviors and beliefs that they know are wrong.

men0wjv , you critcize the fatwa though it dosn’t state any punishments .
this fatwah actually dosn’t support the punishment by lashing in the name of islam by any means

i believe it’s haram in islam for women to wear tight trousers , and i believe either that quran never mentioned any punishments but for commiting adulatery openly ( with existence of 4 witness or more ) for the man and the woman alike , which dosn’t fit the case of this woman

beside i don’t think that salafi is heretical group , i will research about this one anyway to be sure , i hope you either may ask your teacher about this issue

God blessing , i learned much from your posts 🙂

Thanks for that, maybe you could translate what it says, I have to say my Arabic is a bit shaky and so I wasn’t confident enough to dissect it.

Despite the fact that tight fitting clothes are impermissible (for men and women) in public – interestingly, despite the responsibility a person carries in this matter the sin falls on the onlooker - there is no worldly punishment for a woman who just wears trousers, which is what the point being made is. So these Sudanese people mentioned do not practice Shari’ah (since there is no evidence to support such a claim) but something else and therefore Islam cannot be blamed.
My prayers are with the poor woman and her family.

Whilst we say the Salafis are still Muslim because they don’t deny something fundamental to the religion, they are at variance with the majority in serious matters and so are of the ‘fasiqin,’ you can learn this from Al Azhar (my teacher having been there) or Al Qarawiyyin (my other teacher having been there) or the ulema in Damascus (my other teacher being there) or the classical works on heresiology; the Salafis being likened to the Khawarij. Maybe my simile was a little out since JW’s don’t qualify as Christians in a traditional sense, perhaps some puritan type protestant group may have been a better.

Whipping a woman in public like this is disgusting and satanic.
👍 I agree
To “defend” such actions by your particular affiliation as being done by “fringe” or “heretic” types is outrageous
 I’m not defending them, infact I’m a ‘good’ Muslim categorically speaking out against them
By their silence, many “good” muslims do seem to support this kind of thing. It is hard to tell what they “officially” teach as so many of them contradict one another, and like other religions, including “christian” ones, they have many marvellous excuses to reason away behaviors and beliefs that they know are wrong.
To a novice, of course it would be difficult to find the official teaching.
We can go into the details if you wish, but its complex. For example the hadith given could not condone lashing, and trousers for a woman do not necessitate looking like a man. Also who was Muhammad talking to, the people or the judge? What capacity was Muhammad (pbuh) talking in, that of a caliph or a Prophet? These being essential to asertain the ruling; in other words it requires a lot of expertise. For the non-expert we have to resort to the works of law, of which there is no such ruling.
Admittedly we do not know all the details of this case, because its just a newspaper report and possibly the woman may have done more that just wear trousers. I guess we’ll never know 🤷

Wow, the reality on the ground for most of the muslim world is that the shape of the body of a woman should not be visible.

Salafis are not nearly as heretical as some would like you to believe.

They certainly accept carte blanche the traditions of the salafs, without regard for the 4 schools of jurisprudence.

The 4 schools too, would say that the shape of the female form should not be visible, without really declaring war on trousers.

So muslims here are trying to obfuscate the issue by bringing up salafis.

Having said that, they are right everything must be considered before a ruling is accepted.

Most governments are NOT run or influenced by salafis in the muslim world.

Most countries have a history of being associated with one or another maadhab.

And when they formed their implementation of the shariah, it was BASED ON THE RULINGS of those schools of thought.

So this is not a salafi issue in reality, especially since the forbidding of pants is so common in the islamic world.

Pants don’t necessarily mean that one is dressing like the other (in a lot of cultures, not even men would wear pants), and usually women’s clothes, even pants, are tailored differently.

Moreover, pants aren’t forbidden in Islam.

Showing one’s shape isn’t allowed, but lots of Muslims (like most of those in the subcontinent, making up 1/3 of the world’s Muslims) wear pants as custom, without showing their shape. They might even think that NOT wearing pants isn’t allowed.

And I wear pants every day.
