A must read: Account of Martyrdom of Sts. Felicity and Perpetua

The story of the sufferings of Sts. Perpetua and Felicity “is preserved for us in authentic “Acts of the Martyrs” that were composed partly by the saints themselves, and partly by eyewitnesses (perhaps Tertullian). The account may be

During Holy Week I will be posting a graphic account of what Jesus would have endured through a Roman crucifixion. This too I found disturbing.

The story of Perpetua and Felicity is rather lengthy and very moving …* well worth the read* – you could scroll down to the paragraph which commences: “The day of their triumph being come” to read an account of the actual martyrdom, which I found very disturbing and yet my heart wondered at it and I rejoiced in these saints, though very happy it was all over for them and they are in Glory.

As a side note, a very beautiful font was designed by the great typographer Gill for an edition of the Acts of Ss. Perpetua and Felicity, called guess what? (Hint: the italic was called Felicity).

Probably the best computer version is Bitstream’s Lapidary. There are knockoffs with such names as Perpetual.

But you need a nigh-resolution printer–at least 600 dpi, preferably more, to do this font justice.
