I think the problem some are having is that your initial post is very confusing It is rather hard to understand just exactly what you are saying, or where you are coming from. You start out by saying Meister Eckhart is great and the Church silenced him, as if The Church did something really wrong.🤷
I understood what she meant. Or at least I think I do! LOL

That there is a movement to reinstate him. And that Tolle said some similar things but has too much of a mish mash in his book. Kind of what I meant by “mixing spiritual streams”.

I am not Catholic and I do not get all the “catholic speak” but I do enjoy the writings of some of the saints. TBH, I have never heard of Fox.

I was under the impression that Eckhart did not leave the church but went in hiding before they could burn him at the stake!

I think he was misunderstood as well. I found a quote from another Pope, John Paul II, he said: "Did not Eckhart teach his disciples: ‘All that God asks you most pressingly is to go out of yourself - and let God be God in you’? One could think that, in separating himself from creatures, the mystic leaves his brothers, humanity, behind. The same Eckhart affirms that, on the contrary, the mystic is marvelously present to them on the only level where he can truly reach them, that is in God."

*Meister Eckhart was a very sincere and wise man but in terms of some of his teachings the Church did not agree and he placed himself in hot water. *
*I do not mention anywhere in my post that I question the the decision of the Church, for I do not. *
*However, Meister Eckhart was a very dedicated man, a good priest and he gave many years of his life to the Church and to the his people. All of his writings were not condemned. *
*I respect him very much, I love the way he clothed many of his teachings, they have deep meaning, insight, affirm my own conclusions in many areas and these do not conflict with Church teaching in any way. *
*It does not seem a wise thing to throw that which is acceptable away with that which is not acceptable. *
I hope this clears up any confusion that I may have caused you 🙂 .

*No :nope: ! He died of a heart attack on his way home from the trial. *
*Some believed that it was from a broken heart. *
At any rate, it was from than on, in God’s hands.
How about the quote from the Holy Father’s message on prayer, at Saint Joseph’s Seminary, did this have meaning for you? I do hope that it was clear and easy to understand. I am sorry to have confused you 🙂 .

If you’re referring to the “Centering Prayer” technique authored by Trappist Abbot Thomas Keating and Father Basil Pennington, I would urge extreme caution. This method of prayer is a dangerous fusion of non-Christian Eastern (Zen) mysticism and Christian meditation. It is not compatible with Catholic tradition. I suspect the Holy Father would not approve of this method of prayer.

The Church warns against blending Eastern (Zen) mysticism and Christian spirituality in the document Some Aspects of Christian Meditation:
  1. With the present diffusion of eastern methods of meditation in the Christian world and in ecclesial communities, we find ourselves faced with a pointed renewal of an attempt, which is not free from dangers and errors, “to fuse Christian meditation with that which is non-Christian.” Some use eastern methods solely as a psycho-physical preparation for a truly Christian contemplation; others go further and, using different techniques, try to generate spiritual experiences similar to those described in the writings of certain Catholic mystics.

Another disturbing aspect to Centering Prayer is it‘s New Age influence. We read in the document Jesus Christ the Bearer of the Water of Life that the “New Age imports Eastern religious practices piecemeal and re- interprets them to suit Westerners; this involves a rejection of the language of sin and salvation… Additionally, “some of the traditions which flow into New Age are: ancient Egyptian occult practices, Cabbalism, early Christian gnosticism, Sufism, the lore of the Druids, Celtic Christianity, mediaeval alchemy, Renaissance hermeticism, Zen Buddhism, Yoga and so on. Mea Culpa. Sorry if I was rude to anyone. Now I see from where you bring your opinions. I did receive something worthwhile from the series, but I will be on the alert for teachings which go against the Catholic faith. I see where the faithful could be seduced into something which could take them away from the teachings of Christ. I also see where to sanction the entire program could lead to where our Holy Father doesn’t want us to go. So I take back any notion that I approve of the Tolle project on Oprah’s show, and wonder where she is going with this. It does have some good points, but not enough for me to publicly endorse it. Thanks for your perseverance with me and your prayers. Please accept my apologies to all concerned.

*It is always difficult to share with others who are not listening. They tend to zero in on any mistakes they percieve you are making and ponce on you. *
Reacting comes from insecurity :).
If we are not careful we can become defensive ourselves.

*No one learns in these situations nor is there any connection made between persons. **A cloud of negativity hangs over the entire exchange. *When this happens between brothers and sisters in the Church it is discouraging and distrutive.
*Perhaps we listen to others in the same way we listen to God. Distracted and focused on ourselves.
Many, in our day are seeking something which the great Catholic Contemplatives have always taught and shared with us. Orders such as the Carmelites provide a great gift to us and to the Church.
The Church must respond to this need for depth in prayer and in faith in our day or folks like Tolle ( well intentioned I believe) will use the opportunity to jump in and more confusion will follow.
Karl Rahner ( a Cardinal in the Church who also may have said something to get himself into trouble as well 🙂 ) made a statement (some years ago) which has always stuck
in my mind…he said " The Christain of the Twenty First century will be a Mystic or he will be nothing at all".
The Mystic listens, hears and responds to God and to the world from a space of
stillness
(as the Holy Father shared with us on contempative prayer) and we
must
relearn this again. *
I enjoyed you sharing your thoughts very much Schultzz :hug3: .

Catherine,
Thank you for your words of wisdom. I perceive that there is a high degree of accuracy in your intuitiveness. I must not assume that what felt right for me with the process and desire of achieving a higher union with the Triune God would be acceptable to all on equal levels. Some well intentioned souls see only the end of journey and being pragmatic they view the outcome of the journey based on absolutes. I do not find fault with this, but in my heart I know that not everyone is all one thing or all another. The worst of the bad have something good left in them unless they are of the nether world, and the best of the good have a dark side which may only appear with the same frequency as two full moons in one calendar month. People often say that a leopard does not change its spots yet people are not leopards and if the only message you get from the teachings of Christ is that you CAN change, (like some of the Apostles), then you have done well. Despite Tolle’s philosophy interpreted as “New Age”, only God has the right and ability to read his heart and judge his soul. For me Tolle presented something good which helped me. Other folks have the right to interpret differently, de facto. Yes, I do seek contemplative prayer and the means to arrive there despite distractions and temptations which we all must deal with in these times of spiritual darkness. It is obvious to me that you have been blessed with patience and discernment, and I thank you for your intelligent response, and wise words of encouragement.

sorry i skipped a alot of the posts b/c it is pretty long. i have not listened to new earth since i heard oprah say that it was her belief that Jesus did not come to start Christianity. Then it became a religion bashing session by the callers. ** If she was so turned off by hearing God was a jealous God, why aren’t priests addressing verses like this and explaining them better?** I’m sure most are, but many many many people are turned astray by one confusing line spoken or read. That makes me sad.

I apologize if this has already been addressed, the thread is long and I haven’t read each post. I saw a bit of the Oprah video in which she states that God is jealous of us. How ridiculous is that! How people become so misinformed is beyond me. How can she not know that it means that we are to “Love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind and with all our strength” (Mark 12:30) and that we are not to have false gods.

Oprah frequently has Dr. Oz on her program. I recently read that his wife is a reiki master. And I can’t believe that Oprah’s radio station is teaching a Course in Miracles. It disturbs me that Oprah has such a large following and that many people are going to fall into the occult. Has anyone ever heard Oprah mention the Catholic nuns who were kind to her when she was a child? How do intelligent people fall into the occult trap?

How do intelligent people fall into the occult trap?

My guess is that often it’s a matter of unbridled curiousity. In the case of someone like Oprah who suffered from sexual abuse in childhood, it could also be habitual from a lifetime (baseline) of poorly defined personal boundaries.
