**A new Moto Proprio on Music? **

Not that you needed yet another Vatican rumor to keep track of but this is impossible not to pass on (and not the full Mass setting from Mozart’s Coronation Mass on November 19):

Sources close the Holy See are saying that during his upcoming visit to the St. Cecilia Music Academy Pope Benedict XVI may address the need to recover the quality of sacred music in the liturgical life of the Church.

The feast of St. Cecilia, patroness of music, will be celebrated on November 22, and the Pontiff has announced that during that week he intends to visit the academy of music in Rome that bears the saint’s name.

According to Vatican sources consulted by the Catholic News Agency, the Holy Father, who has expressed his concern over liturgical music, may addres! s the need to recover the place of sacred music, “both Gregorian and polyphonic,” in the Catholic liturgy.

“This pronouncement could even take the form of a ‘Motu Propio,’ an official document issued on the Holy Father’s own initiative,” sources said.

Since the election of Pope Benedict XVI, sacred music has been given greater attention in the Roman liturgy

On November 19, as part of the year of Mozart—one of Pope’s favorite composers—Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna, will preside at a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, in which the famous Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna will present Mozart’s Mass of Coronation.

Although no time has been official allotted for remarks by the Holy Father, it is possible he will address the faithful at the conclusion of the liturgical celebration.

Greetings,

Sweeeeeeet!! :clapping: I’d love to see B-XVI promulgate a moto proprio on this issue. Imagine, no more drums, guitar or whatever 😃 Anyone who has read his version of “Spirit of the Liturgy” will know how much he’s aware of this and other problems in the church. I just pray that he will act as quickly as possible. :gopray2:

I sincerely hope this is true. When I was received into the Church 5 years ago, I was very disappointed in the music. Luckily, my parish (St. Mary in Austin) has an excellent church choir; we sing chant and polyphony frequently. Last year, we sang Monteverdi’s
“Vespers of 1610,” and won the Austin Critics’ Table Award for Best Choral Performance of 2005. We put on an All-Souls concert
every year, singing a requiem mass. I feel blessed to be with this group.

For another traditional church choir, check out the website of the St. Cecilia Schola Cantorum of St. Michael’s.

I learned a long time ago to ignore the rumors, wait for it to happen and pray like crazy until it does.

Pax vobiscum!

I certainly hope this rumor is true. We really do need to have an official statement issued about music in the Mass. And, knowing this pope, it will be a statement to my liking. 👍

Bravo! No more kumbuya - no more guitars - and let’s celebrate by having a bonfire made with the Glory and Praise hymnals!

Here is what my pastor had to say concerning Sacred Music and the Post Vatican II Church.

Look for pigs soaring in triumphant flight through the air, for:

Kleary and I are in perfect agreement! I’ll bring the marshmallows and chocolate, you bring the graham crackers, we’ll do s’mores over the crisping script of “Gather Us In.”

PLEEEAAASEEE…My parish needs a more Latin feel, since we are Latin Rite. The music hardly reflects that sometimes though…

Love beautiful music, and yes, guitar played beautifully , does lend itself to Latin hymns. Many parishes no longer have the organist we enjoyed in the past. The church music world is changing and it is not all bad. A beautiful guitar piece is much better than poorly played organ music.

Love and peace,

I think it might be worth pointing out that there are already many liturgical directives in place, such as the prohibition of dance, that are widely ignored. I can’t think of a reason that a new papal directive would be any different. The last several popes have simply left enforcement up to the bshops, who by and large have not been very good about it.

What may be necessary and what we may see in time is something to the nature of Redemptionis Sacramentum but addressing the practices of Sacred Music in the liturgy. However, I have heard rumors of this for nearly five years now. Back then it was rumored that John Paul II was going place a ban on certain instruments. However, no such thing was ever forthcoming. However, having read much of what the current Holy Father has said concerning the issue of Sacred Music I would not be surprised if we see something in time.

Unfortunately, I think you’re right. The Pope would have to show up, mitre on head, pastoral staff in hand, at the OCP offices for them to take any notice.

And then he’d have to use a flame thrower to get their attention.

Oh, wouldn’t it be nice. The cathedral choir shouts “No more ‘muppet music’ for diocesan events!”

I wonder if we could require that our bishops read the sentiments expressed on this fora regarding liturgy and music. Methinks it’s pretty obvious that something needs to be done.
