Recently, I was told that there is a new Monastic Order (Society) that has formed in South San Francisco. I was told its name but for the life of me I can’t remember it.

Has anyone heard of it? Supposedly it will offer 6TLM’s weekly AND 5 Byzantine Rite D.Lit. each week.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

The archdiocese should have some information on it; contacting them might be the shortest route.

I don’t know, but I’ve heard from my pastor that a Byzantine Rite priest that I know is transferring to a monastic society in San Francisco. Maybe this is it. I’ll call him after Christmas to see if I can get more details.

Yep, I found it. And, Babochka, you are correct. There is a Byzantine priest transferring there from Washington State on January 3, 2015. The Order is called the Contemplatives of St. Joseph.

They will be teaching priests how to say the EF, OF and Byzantine Rites reverently. Contemplative prayer is their main thrust. They were authorized by the Archbishop of San Francisco.
You can find them by searching for “Contemplatives of St. Joseph”. 😃

FWIW, the SJCantius priests originally were set up to be tri-ritual (OF, EF, and Byzantine) but had to abandon that idea. Something to do with jurisdiction.

well, I attended my first Byzantine Divine Liturgy on Saturday. Fr. Lane was the celebrant. Its his last as he left right afterwards for the Contemplatives of St. Joseph in South San Francisco.

I have to admire the Byzantines. I think we stood for almost the whole liturgy. (homily excepted). It was a beautiful experience.

However, my first love is for the Tridentine Mass. I prefer to kneel before God. Yes, I understand the Byzantine tradition that standing is the "highest "form of respect and reverence (at least thats how it was explained to me.)

But I’m a traditional Roman at heart.
