A non-controversial question (I hope)

I’ve seen a lot of banners telling when people “swam the Tiber”, or when they’re going to.
Does this mean what it sounds like? And if so, what’s the big deal about swimming in an Italian river?
 
:cool: No controversy about it. If the Tiber is a river in Italy, and Vatican City is in Italy, then one is swimming to Vatican City. “All roads lead to Rome”

Or, less metaphorically, one who is a convert to Catholicism. :cool:
 
It is a reference to converting to Catholic Church. The Tiber is a river running near or through Rome. To cross the river toward Rome is to come close to the Roman Church, ie convert.
