I am a bit down today.😦

I’m hopeful that I can hear some replies from some of you dads out there–particularly those who are above 45, and had children, maybe not planned with your wives, or perhaps, you wives wanted more children, and you were fearful of having more at that age. In speaking about opening ourselves up to life, my husband has flip flopped some of his thoughts on the matter…Running from …whatever God wills, to I don’t want anymore kids. We are not planning to enlarge our family. We have two kids 11 and 15, but we are turning back to using NFP, as a form of natural birth control, but if we get pregnant, then that would be God’s will, I feel that way. I think my husband feels that way, but he said last night, after the kids went to bed…*I can’t see us having more kids…I am nearly 50. I don’t know if it is selfish to be up in years when our kids are teenagers. *(I’m 39 tomorrow)

I work fulltime, and make a great living–I don’t know if he wonders if I’d quit, if a baby came into our family, how would we manage? He makes a good living, but it costs a lot to live in Florida…even a modest home in a safe neighborhood, can cost $200k. Ours is appraised at $300k, although there are foreclosures popping up everywhere…we may just end up landing one. Or we may be able to talk down the Owner of our home, to a more realistic price, since no homes are going in our area for $300k, because of the real estate crash. But, that’s neither here nor there, but my husband probably has all of this swirling around in his mind. He also is in the process of transition, having moved here but 6 months ago, he is in between jobs as they say.

The bottom line is…we are going to be open to life, and my husband agrees with the method. We are on the same page, with that part of it–but if we were to have a baby, he doesn’t seem as ‘happy go lucky’ about it as me. It would change our lives drastically, no doubt, but I told him, I’m not worrying about life, anymore. He said…why didn’t we have more kids when we were younger? I don’t know the answer to that. I don’t regret having two children…But, the possibity of getting pregnant is there, if we are following a natural method.

If you can help me understand a man’s perspective on this, I’d appreciate it. Feel free–men or women to reply, I am hopeful though of hearing from some 45+ men who had kids later in life, and who struggled with the idea of it at first. Insight into my husband flip flopping, would be helpful.

As Price Pritchett would say…‘Problems are the natural offspring of change.’:o This is a big change for us.

since life expectancy has steadily increased in this century even a 50 year old parent can reasonably expect to be alive until well after his child graduates, begins a career and starts a family, what is this concern?

I don’t know. His concern is that he is not as young as he was when we had our first two. He acts like he is 82, for pete’s sakes. Not sure, annie. I am just feeling down about this today. I pray for God’s will to prevail, and if it be His will for us to have more children…He will help my husband and I to handle it.

No advice, just wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday! 🙂 I’ll pray for you both in your journey!

Thank you, Sam!!

I think that I need to be patient with my husband, too. I need to try to hear him…not just…ok, let’s try this, and you better be on board with it. That type of thinking is a bit unreasonable, on my part. I didn’t mean to throw a monkey wrench into our lives…but, sometimes, as much as we believe we are one flesh, if we get selfish now and again? If we just say…hmmm, how is this going to affect ME? My husband is a very giving man…very patient. He might be shell shocked right now. I am also feeling down today, because I regret using the pill, and not learning what the Church taught about marital sexuality. We never swung from the chandaliers, mind you…lol But, we definitely didn’t include God in that aspect of our relationship. I’m grateful to have discovered this teaching, yet guilty in a way. I am going to confession tomorrow, maybe that will help me.😦

Happy Birthday… first off! 😃

This is a concern I have in the back of my head for our future…
My DH is 10 years older than I am…

And while I started having children relatively early (3 pregnancies between ages 24-29), I do have fears that I will be fertile for at least another 10 years… when I reach 40 he’ll be 50. And not to mention his father died at the age of 59 (due to diabetes, which DH doesn’t have)… but it’s something I think about.

Something to pray about, at the very least, huh?! :o

WhateverGirl,
I am 44 and trying to conceive. I would be 45 well before I gave birth. I think about retirement, being young enough to chase a toddler, etc… But the bottom line for me is, if it is God’s will it will happen, if not… I have a 20 yo, 18 yo, 16 yo and a step that is 12yo… and they are all great kids… but it doesn’t matter, they were all gifts from God. I guess what I am trying to say (badly) is that I understand your DH’s concerns, but he just has to trust that God wouldn’t give him more than he can handle.

You took a great leap of faith in your marriage lately… And that is totally awesome. Didn’t it make you feel good just knowing you were doing according to God’s plan? God provides for everything in our lives…even when it doesn’t seem so at the time. My favorite saying is, “I tried it my way… but it didn’t work. God’s plans are always better than my own.” Just trust…

I feel like I’m looking in a mirror.😃 Yes, my husband is roughly 10 years older…so, it’s a concern. I have to say too…I was around babies last night, and it’s like I didn’t know what to do anymore!:o I have been out of this age group for a while, now, myself. This may sound weird, but it’s like I have been working in the business world for a while now, and thought to myself…do you know how to do this anymore? haha:p

Please bear with me everyone, I’m overjoyed with God’s revelation in our lives…but now feeling a little…confused by what it could all mean, if we did have a new life in our lives. Maybe we don’t need to understand it all, really. I am reading Mother Angelica’s life story book, by Raymond Arroyo (sp?) and wow, she is such a smart lady! She is a working mom, when you think about it.😉 She says in her book…“When you stop caring about what happens, that is when your will is really aligned with God’s.” Now, she isn’t saying to just throw caution to the wind, and not think things through…but I relate it to if my husband and I were to have a baby now…she is meaning to not question it-just go with it.

I guess I need to loosen my seat belt on this ride called, life.:o

God bless you, how helpful your post has been. Do you work, Blest?

Men–please don’t be timid to post here. :o We won’t judge anything you have to say–I really am interested in the potential thinking of men, too, related to this matter. Thank you!!!

Remind DH that you could arrange things so he could be a SAHD, it works great for us 😃

The possibility of you getting pregnant has always been there, even when you and your husband were using birth control. The only difference is that now you are being honest with yourselves. The marital act is a life giving act, and I think that is a beautiful thing to be open to.

Whatevergirl, I think it is a good thing that you and your husband are talking like this and really opening up to each other. Don’t feel bad that your husband isn’t as excited about the possibility of becoming a parent again. I think it is really good that he is letting you know how he feels, letting you know that he is scared.

That is very interesting–does your dh also have a job that pays, that he does from home? How did you arrive at that? Your post is interesting!

It is good. My husband is not an emotional man. He is not unemotional, but when it comes to HIM, he shys away from filling me in on his emotions. I tell him always that I am there to talk to…I can sometimes not be the greatest listener, when I think that we should do something, so I have to work on that. I think he feels that I am changing things…he sees God in it, but he said…why do other faiths not see things the way the church does, and do we suppose they are all going to Hell? Only Catholics are not making it to Heaven, you know…he said. I said I know that, but if we are to follow this faith, we need to believe that the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit. He said that much of these ‘laws’ came only in the past 50 years. Is that true? Not the marital embrace part, right? Maybe he is referring to artifical birth control?

Wow…listen to this, in discussing my concerns with a friend, she just wrote me that…part of God’s plan for natural birth control, is so both the husband and wife are taking responsibility for a life being brought into the world, or choosing to postpone pregnancy. When a women is taking the pill, or a man uses the condom…it not only thwarts God’s message to be open to life, but only one person is responsible for the act, so to speak. Since it takes two to tango, both should be willing to be responsible for the act.

Wow–that is so insightful!

My husband has a BA in fine art, and is a wildly talented artist. He has been in the graphics side of the world for ever. When we moved here, there were no jobs in his field. He has been a SAHD for almost 8 years now. He does the occasional freelance gig, or a commissioned piece here and there. FAR more the freelance is free because it is a donation 🙂

He cooks and cleans and does the laundry and manages the house upkeep all those nine million things every stay at home parent does. If DH had a full time job, we would have to pay someone to come in to clean house, we would pay much more in eating out…

DH is also up to his eyeballs involved at the Parish as a volunteer.

It is just what has worked out for us and our son has thrived by the great closeness he has with his dad in these formative years.

That is really cool!

Truthfully…in thinking about it, my employer currently would probably let me work from home. I don’t need to be in the office…I need a laptop, which they gave me already…and a phone. I can do what I need to do from home. I will not even say a word, unless we were pregnant though. lol

It’s kind of overwhelming…I have babies in my head…I have an employer trying to recruit me in my head…I have my husband with a frown on his face one minute, and a smile the other in my head…I have my daughter saying I am not sharing my room with a new baby in my head…hahahaha I need to run away. That’s it…that’ll solve it!😛

I’m kidding of course.😉

My DH is about 10 years older than me too, and we’ve obviously had an oops. 😊

He’ll have a 19yo and I’ll have a 12yo when the baby is born, and he’s been back and forth very happy and wanting more, to Oh my, what kind of father am I gonna be as a geriatric! (He too acts like he’s in his 80’s.)

He makes a decent living as a software developer and I do not make a great wage, but together we git’er done. 🙂

Right now we’re focused on getting a house (we live in an apartment) and getting a nice nest egg built up - so I think he feels like he’s attacking life all over again. When a lot of his peers are in the ‘early’ stages of thinking abuot retirement etc, he’s almost just starting out! I understand that can be frustrating and scary, and I just try to be supportive and understanding.

I think at the end of it all, as I stay open to life, and he see’s I’m not loosing my noodle, and handling everything normally, he’ll jump on the bandwagon too 🙂 It’s when he senses I’m worried or frustrated, he gets worried or frustrated.

God bless your family…and your perseverance! I personally like your last paragraph…yes, if I get anxious, he does. But, sometimes, visa versa…he keeps pointing out the potential negatives…and then I start seeing them. My dh is pretty young at heart…but, it could be what you are saying…‘starting over’…but it could also be viewed as a rebirth.:heaven: He flip flops…perhaps, this is normal?:o
