The guards, set over the tomb of Christ to keep anyone from being able to steal away the body, see Christ coming out from the tomb. Christ, perfectly calm, contrasts with the guards, confused and in a panic.
The supernatural light radiating from Christ contrasts with the areas of darkness around Christ.
One of the guards, half-dressed as he rises from sleep, looks towards Christ coming out of his tomb. In the forefront and with his back turned, he becomes part of the audience, joins us as he responds amazement at Christ, who was dead and now is alive.
This painting is huge, 4 1/2 feet by 3 feet in size. Painted four hundred years ago, this painting is in the Cathedral of Our Lady, in Antwerp, Belgium.
