Today in confession a priest said. “You have been very disobedient in arguing in front of your kids with your husband. It is your role to be submissive to his authority no matter how wrong you thing he is. You need to be obedient.”

My husband had given our 17 year old a beer, and I didn’t think it was right. I take my baptisimal vows seriously, where I agree to reject Satan and all of his empty works and promises. I’m sorry, but when my husband teaches the kids about guns, beer, and fails to supervise their their purchase of video games, I take this seriously, and look at it as corruption.

Who is correct? Me or the priest?

Colosians 3:18-20 “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter towards them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing to the Lord.”

Beer is morally neutral. There is nothing immoral about beer, and learning to enjoy a beer in moderation is something a parent can teach their child.

In some states it is illegal for parents to serve alcohol to underage children, you would be advised to check the laws and share those with your husband.

Your priest is correct, it is not proper to argue about these morally neutral things in front of your children. If you husband was giving your son pornography, THAT is the time to stand up and take a moral stand. A cold bud lite ain’t a sin, it is not the work of the devil.

There is a bigger picture here. You have posted recently about many disagreements with your priest, disagreements with the school principal, and now disagreements with your spouse.

I really suggest some counseling to help you get to the bottom of the source of strife that seems to surround you.

Pray for peace - remember “blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” and “by this will all men know that you are my disciples, that you love one another”.

I don’t know exactly if the priest was saying that you can not disagree with your husband OR if he was reprimanding you for arguing in front of your kids about your husband’s parenting. I think the problem is if you argued with your husband about his parenting in front of your children–not so much that you disagreed but the manor in which you raised your objections. If wives object to something our husbands do, we certainly can voice our opinions, but wait for the right time & place and be respectful rather than argumentative.

Satan is behind beer? There is nothing evil about beer. Not only does beer and wine have a huge tradition/history in the Church and Her history, monks and abbeys were some of the largest producers in Christendom of alcohol. Heck, even Trappist monks STILL make money making beer (Chimay - it’s delicious, try it).

Guns are not evil. The people who use them might be, but they, like beer, are not good.

I think you’re wrong.

Okay-thank you all for your advice. I’ll consider all al what you had to say. I appreciate the time you have taken to respond.

When I was a teen, my parents allowed me to have beer sometimes - only with family and only one and not all the time. I knew what it tasted like, and so when my friends got all ‘excited’ about kegger parties, I did not see what the big deal was…

My kids have all tasted alcohol…one likes the taste, the other 2 dislike it. They all know the consequences of imbibing too much or drinking illegally.

Beer in and of itself is not wrong.
Guns are not wrong.
Each of my boys knows how to shoot a gun, and each knows they can be deadly. They are educated about firearms.

Regarding video games, a 17 year old can legally purchase an M rated video game with ID. She can legally see R rated movies. FWIW, my 14 yo plays M rated video games…sure, some can be violent, but he likes them for the strategy, not the violence. He is certainly NOT a violent kid!
