Why should faithful Catholics all think the same thing about this book?
 
Well, how of the book should faithful Catholics disregard? Mr. Zinn was never a Christian, was he?
 
What does being a faithful Catholic have to do with anything in this situation? I would hope that anyone would be able to disregard the parts that are factually incorrect, accept the parts that are factually correct, and think critically about any parts that they disagree with.

Again, not that it’s relevant, but Zinn was raised Jewish.
 
Mr. Zinn was a Communist propagandist. It should go without saying that Christians should not give him any credence.

There is a lot of misinformation in the book. It once was looked at as a pretty comprehensive history text, however, many of the errors have been exposed it is pretty easy to see it as just political propaganda.

Oops! I meant to ask, “Well, how much of the book should faithful Catholics disregard?”

As for Zinn supposedly being an out-and-out Communist, I would like people to check out this video.
 
I think Zinn’s heart is in the right place in giving the powerless a voice, and telling their story against the established powers. In the realm of politics, however, his idea of democracy seemed to be mobs of people gathering and waving signs, yelling, etc, until The Government enacted legislation to make them happy. Making the State into the doer-of-every-deed is not only dangerous, given human nature, but it is self-defeating, because the more the state takes on the less effective it becomes. If you don’t like the state, you could say possibly that’s a good thing, but it doesn’t mean the state is impotent. It just means its power is going to be manifest in unpredictable ways, like the proverbial bull in a China job. When the state gets larger, as Zinn would unfortunately have it, it can’t move without stepping on the lives of people. I was crestfallen when he passed away, but I don’t think he was aware of the inevitable consequences of the ‘change’ he broadcast.
