I have never understood why Evangelicals have issues with the honor given to Mary by Catholics.

The Hail Mary prayer is straight up taken right out of the Bible. St. Elizabeth said to the Blessed Mother that She was Blessed among women, and Blessed is the fruit of Her womb Jesus. Even in the Bible, Mary said that all generations will call Her Blessed.

I was in Evangelical Protestant circles too once upon a time. I know this too well. So much for sola scriptura.

I thought his point about feeling like it was not wrong for them to spend lots of their time honoring Paul, yet we were wrong in spending lots of time honoring Mary.

And the point that man-Jesus was a man precisely because he came from his human man-mother, Mary. And if it weren’t for Mary, there would never have been a Paul either. And if God had not first honored her, we would not have had God’s honor.

I was an evangelical before I converted. Its simply a different way of thinking. If you rarely hear a reference to Mary, you would not think that she had a special role. It is only when you look into the issue that you realise there is anything wrong with this approach.
