My city has an Islamic community, mostly of immigrants, and a few are regular patrons of mine at the library. I often have long book talks with a city councilor who is a convert to Islam. A long-time acquaintance of mine is a convert to Islam, but I do not take that very seriously. As far as I can tell, it has zero influence on his morality. One of my favorite shows to watch online and now on DVD is Little Mosque on the Prairie, so I also have that kind of exposure – it’s a sitcom about a mosque renting space in an Anglican parish hall in Canada, and the members of the mosque are from various Islamic countries (Nigeria, Pakistan, Lebanon). Personally, I feel a closer kinship to Muslims who take their faith seriously and try to live godly lives than to cultural Christians whose experience is limited to wearing a cross necklace and going to church on Easter.
