I find myself discomforted at Mass whenever I go to one of those more progressive Chuches and even some more traditional, whenever the lector announces the priest as “our ‘presider’ today is Father so and so.”

How can the sacred priesthood accept thiis degredation of the ability to bring Christ Himself to the People of God by his own hands, and tolerate by being called a “presider”

My God folks, all it requires to be a presider is a gavel and a loud voice - (think Nancy Pelosi)
 
I agree. Perhaps you should mention this to your priest. The priest is acting in the person of Christ during the Mass. He is more than a mere ‘presider.’

I’d have to go with the above poster on this one. Words have different connotations for all of us, dependent on our experiences, but “presider” sounds right to my ear. If it bothers you, though, definitely speak to your Priest. Maybe when you know how they’re using the word, it won’t bother you so much.

On a completely less serious note: Stop thinking of Nancy Pelosi during Mass!!🙂 Politics should be left out in the car.

But it IS a worship service. It’s as close to the most perfect worship we can offer while we’re still in this life.

That may be but it is only a small part of the Mass, teh most important part of the Mass is Christ’s sacrifice for us that is the important part.

Calluing the Mass a worship service is like calling the Eucharist “a community meal” it may be true, but it is an imperfect definition.

Also we are not offering the Mass, Christ is offering Himself to us. We are on the receiving end in Mass.

I’ve never heard the term presider, but I’ve always heard the term “celebrant”, which I think I’d prefer. Out of curiosity, what would you have the lector say?
 
In the second century, in Justin’s Apology, he speaks of the “president” of the assembly as the one who leads the people in the celebration of the Eucharist. A president presides. That is where the term comes from.

Our “priest” is a good start. The “priest” is standing in for Christ offering the sacrifice. That is what priests do - offer sacrifices, not preside over ceremonys.(With the possible exception of marriage - where he does, in addition to offering the Sacrifice of the Mass)

(An MC Master of Ceremony or a president calls a meeting to order and presides over it.)

Any religion can have a worship service, Catholics have The Mass…

There are many animals, and some of those animals are human, there are many humans some of them are men, there are many men in history but only one of them is Jesus. Calling Jesus an animal/mammal/human as the descriptor is correct but not quite right. Get my drift? you are not wrong, you are just not quite precise enough.

I don’t like presider and I’m not really crazy about celebrant, either.

I’m the cantor at our Saturday vigil Mass, and here’s how I make the announcement:
Father X will celebrate the Mass of the Second Sunday of Lent.

So I haven’t given him a functional title, and I haven’t claimed that Saturday is the Second Sunday of Lent, either.

Our parsh also has a commentator, who stands up before Mass, and before the the readings to give some commentary about the Mass, feast, and scripture readings.

Kind of annoying
