So you are technically an atheist who is really impressed by the universe?
Furthermore, the big bang theory, time and space coming into existence at that moment. Any of these verifiable scientific **facts **ringing a bell?
“The conclusion of this lecture is that the universe has not existed forever. Rather, the universe, and time itself, had a beginning in the Big Bang, about 15 billion years ago.” Stephen Hawking
* The Beginning of Time*
I have a list of these quotes and there context by reputable scientist. You do believe in science don’t you?
If time had a beginning then that means something not bound by this dimension must have ***caused ***its creation.
Secondly, if you were right and all men learned and unlearned alike had this information then…well I’ll let this quote drive home my point.
The Polish poet Ceslav Milos has said that the modern opium of the people is not religion, but the very opposite:* the belief in ultimate nothingness*. He wrote: **“It is a belief in nothingness after death, the huge solace of thinking that for all our betrayals, our greed, our cowardice and our murders, that we are not going to be judged.” **—Vinoth Ramachandra
I’m willing to look at it from your perspective the problem is you have to be willing to have it challenged and be able to defend it. People can believe anything they want, however, I believe they should at least think about it first and be able to justify those beliefs when challenged and be able to answer honest inquiries.
I guess it will turn into a debate but if you want your beliefs respected then this is something in life you have to "man up about"and live with. you should be able to defend them . People may not accept your answers but at least you have them and in your mind at least you have sufficiently logical reasons to maintain them.
Like you said the universe is dependent and orderly. Through natural reason one can come to an understanding of why it is so and by what power brought it to be this way.
I don’t find it rational to believe the universe is the ultimate reality when modern science suggest otherwise.
Men 600 years ago seeing the sun rise and set would not have thought it rational that the Earth revolves around the sun when their eyes were telling them otherwise.
Having certain belies supplemented by both reason and philosophy is admirable and rational, don’t you?
Its your “opinion” that we cannot know and you didn’t really show how my first post was faulty.
I assume people want truth and when I believe I have it I feel the need to share it with others, I guess it was to much to hope for that this courtesy, whether I was right or not, is reciprocated.
If the Christian god is real and you accept that then you gain your salvation. If you don’t and you deny him you lose out on the most awesome experience a sentient being could ever hope to have.
First off you replied to a post that was a point by point outline of why I, other Christians, and theist in general believe in a god. If you disagree with it and you want your opinion to be respected and considered you should do the same. Unless of course you don’t care if the argument were valid or not, truthful or not. If that is the case then I hope you one day overcome this apathy.
Secondly, you are on a Catholic forum and if you know anything about the Catholic faith you know that it is our duty to
“preach the gospel” to all nations. This would include you.
I am simply trying to follow this command through debate and reason.
What did you expect would happen to you on a Catholic forum in a thread titled “A Plea for Atheist”.
Certain beliefs are dangerous. I know that is an extreme example but if you knew that debating the terrorist of 9/11 might convince them not to hijack those planes and crash the into the twin towers would you do it.
In any case I’m sorry if I came off as hostile and although you say you didn’t challenge my beliefs maybe you consider the possibility that you did anyway subtly and unconsciously.
I think from the start I pretty much told you I was an atheist impressed with the Universe. I have never pretended to be anything else.
The big bang is a theory. And there are many reputable scientists that think it is part of a cyclical cycle, that the Universe expands, then contracts and big bangs again.
I was a science educator and researcher for 16 years. I’m married to a scientist. I have lots of respect for the field, but I also know, from first hand experience, what they say isn’t gospel. Especially in the arena of what happened many billions of years ago that started this whole thing.
I do think that space and time began at the big bang. Time is our term for everything changing positions relative to one another within the Universe. So, if everything was contracted into a super dense mass, then there would be no time or space until such began to expand.
How does one decide what “forever” is? I mean, if what we experience as time is dependent upon the big bang, then anything beyond that, is out of time. Doesn’t that make time the limits of forever?
I am a time bound creature, what may or may not have been in a reality outside of time isn’t something I can really address. You seem to feel you can, so it makes sense that you do.
I don’t doubt something caused the big bang. No one knows what that is. Not even Mr Hawking. You say that it is your god. I don’t see a reason to believe that. I admit that I don’t know. If that makes you disrespect me, that’s fine. I didn’t come here trying to get you to respect my beliefs. I don’t think that any answer is automatically better than admitting not knowing. I read what science thinks about these things, but that doesn’t mean I accept them as “gospel” truth.
I am willing to be challenged. I said I’m not interested in going point to point with you over the characteristics of the Christian god. I don’t see why we should argue details when we don’t agree on whether or not there is a god in the first place.
If your definition of god is “supernatural being”, then we disagree, if your definition of god is “ultimate reality, source and cause” then we just disagree on the form it takes.
I discuss my beliefs and debate my beliefs all the time (not here, but on forums for such discussion).
Science is trying to discover why the Universe is orderly. I’m fine with that, it in no way threatens my beliefs, I am confident there are natural reasons it is as it is. Are you confident that their reasoning and inquiry will come face to face with your god?
I don’t recall saying the Universe is dependent. I don’t believe that, dependent upon what? It is the sum of all things and the order that causes all things to be and operate as they do. The universe is not just the stuff, it IS the order as well. You call that order god and consider it supernatural. I see that order as inherently part of the natural universe.
I understand that you don’t think my beliefs are rational. You think it is irrational of me to believe the Universe, of which I am a part, which brought me forth, sustains me and everything I know, that I will never exist outside or, or observe anything outside of…is my ultimate reality. OK.
But you think it is rational to believe in an invisible supernatural being with all the characteristics your faith ascribes to such, who comes and visits you under the guise of bread and wine.
And I’ve never said your beliefs, which I think there is a wee bit less evidence for, are irrational. I respect you enough to feel sure you have some very good reasons to hold them.
I guess you are right, I led you astray by not ignoring your original posts to me.
Perhaps somewhere you missed my saying that I don’t think religion needs to be rational. It’s a tool that helps us order our lives and motivates us to “man up” when challenges arise. I don’t think it needs to always be literal truth, it needs to serve.
So, you can claim I don’t defend my faith, I do, to a point. But I havent made the claims for mine Catholicism makes. I don’t tell everyone it is literal truth and that they had better believe it too or else they are in for a nasty surprise. I tell them it is my religion, and that it makes a difference in my life.
Not all faiths are like your, not all make the claims and demands yours make.
I think most religions are metaphor, myth, and a dash of wishful thinking. I have no problem with that. Not everything in life has to be or should be rational, literal, logical, etc.
I know that is what you demand of your faith, but that is not the place religion holds for everyone in the world.
The Universe is my ultimate reality, the only one I’ll ever know. I dont see that as irrational, at least no more irrational than many claims of your faith.
