Father Geoffrey Hilton: Diocese of Salford
**It is with sadness we inform you of the news that Fr Geoffrey Hilton died suddenly on Thursday 9th March at St. Osmund’s Breightmet. Fr Hilton was in his sixty-first year, the twenty-eighth year of his Sacred Priesthood. May he rest in peace. **
Geoffrey was born on 30th September 1956 in Worsley. He was baptised on 27th November 1956 at St. Paul’s, Walkden and was received into Full Communion with the Church at St. Edmund’s, Little Hulton on 28th May 1981. He was educated at Walkden High School and Hutton Hall Police College, Preston. Geoffrey was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in September 1982, studying at the English College, Valladolid. He transferred to Campion House, Osterley, in 1984 and to the Beda College, Rome, in 1985. Fr Geoffrey Hilton was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on 28th May 1989.
Fr Hilton served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments: Assistant Priest: 1989-1993: St. Bernard’s, Burnage; 1993-1996: St. Ann’s, Stretford, and Chaplain to Trafford General Hospital. Parish Priest 1996-2000: St. Teresa’s, Blackburn; 2000-2005: St. Augustine’s, Burnley; 2005-2017: St. Osmund’s, Breightmet.
Fr Hilton’s body will be received into St. Osmund’s, Breightmet,for concelebrated Mass at 7.30 p.m. on
Thursday 23rd March. Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass at St. Osmund’s on
Friday 24th March at 12:30 p.m. followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Wardley.
Community devastated by loss of a much-loved priest in Breightmet
Father Geoffrey Hilton, aged 59, who was parish priest at St Osmund’s RC Church, died on Thursday morning.
Julie McDonald, headteacher of SS Osmund and Andrew’s RC Primary school, said in a tribute: “After many years involvement in our school, it was with great sadness that we heard of Father Hilton’s passing. He will be greatly missed by our whole school community.”
The Bishop of Salford, the Rt Rev John Arnold, said: "We are deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of Fr Hilton. His death has come as a shock to his family, friends and parishioners. We are keeping them all in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
