As an update, I was able to attend Fr Hilton’s funeral today. The church was full to overflowing. Requiem Mass was due to start at 12:30pm, By just after midday, it was already standing-room only. It looked as though half the priests of the diocese had turned out for the funeral. The Principal concelebrant was Bishop John Arnold, the Ordinary of the diocese. As people may have gathered from the links and information on previous posts, Fr Hilton had been a keen sportsman as well as being a late vocation, so there were many people there who knew him from either his time in the police or his many sporting activities.

**It is with sadness we inform you of the news that Fr Geoffrey Hilton died suddenly on Thursday 9th March at St. Osmund’s Breightmet. Fr Hilton was in his sixty-first year, the twenty-eighth year of his Sacred Priesthood. May he rest in peace. **

Geoffrey was born on 30th September 1956 in Worsley. He was baptised on 27th November 1956 at St. Paul’s, Walkden and was received into Full Communion with the Church at St. Edmund’s, Little Hulton on 28th May 1981. He was educated at Walkden High School and Hutton Hall Police College, Preston. Geoffrey was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in September 1982, studying at the English College, Valladolid. He transferred to Campion House, Osterley, in 1984 and to the Beda College, Rome, in 1985. Fr Geoffrey Hilton was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on 28th May 1989.

Fr Hilton served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments: Assistant Priest: 1989-1993: St. Bernard’s, Burnage; 1993-1996: St. Ann’s, Stretford, and Chaplain to Trafford General Hospital. Parish Priest 1996-2000: St. Teresa’s, Blackburn; 2000-2005: St. Augustine’s, Burnley; 2005-2017: St. Osmund’s, Breightmet.

Fr Hilton’s body will be received into St. Osmund’s, Breightmet,for concelebrated Mass at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday 23rd March. Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass at St. Osmund’s on Friday 24th March at 12:30 p.m. followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Wardley.

Father Geoffrey Hilton, aged 59, who was parish priest at St Osmund’s RC Church, died on Thursday morning.

Julie McDonald, headteacher of SS Osmund and Andrew’s RC Primary school, said in a tribute: “After many years involvement in our school, it was with great sadness that we heard of Father Hilton’s passing. He will be greatly missed by our whole school community.”

The Bishop of Salford, the Rt Rev John Arnold, said: "We are deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of Fr Hilton. His death has come as a shock to his family, friends and parishioners. We are keeping them all in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Read more

That sounds to us like a piece of straightforward, yet wise and deeply profound, spiritual advice to keep us all going in these tough times. In common with Fr. Hilton’s sudden death, it also reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways; and that we need to remain ever close to God in the state of grace.

One thought I would have on this is that it reminds us that we know “neither the day nor the hour”. We all like to hope that we will live to a ripe old age then die peacefully surrounded by our families and with the benefit of the Sacraments. But God may have other plans for us. Perhaps we need to pray more that we will remain in God’s grace. Praying for the grace of “a happy death” - i.e. with the benefit of the Sacraments and in God’s grace - used to be a popular Catholic devotion, maybe more of us - including me - should consider it.
