i just remembered that during work as i was serving a customer i said something within myself that may have been impure. My problem is i can not remember what i was thinking or said within myself. i dont know if i should confess this since i didn’t continue with it and can not remember what i was thinking. And it happened without me thinking about the consiqences of thinking such a thing.

after I said something within myself i relized i should of not said it within myself. but thats all i remember

what do i do. Does this need to be confessed

Ask God to help you remember, and ask Him if you need to confess it. Worse case basis, next time you go to Confession, mention this to the priest just as you have, telling him you can’t remember.

Also, just saying something impure to yourself “might not” be a mortal sin, but may point to an attachment to sin that you need to work on. Depends on if you consented in your heart to what you said.

Doesn’t seem to me that you have to remember the specifics. In fact I think it’s better that you don’t. That only recalls the thought that you do not wish to have.
You beleive that you had a transiant impure thought and feel that you should perhaps confess it. That is sufficiant unto itself.
Therefore Go to confession and say, “Father I had one impure thought” (or two or five or whatever)…
In this way you will be at peace.

Peace

If the thought was deliberately considered and you dwelt upon it, then yes, it is possible to sin in thought.

If it was fleeting, it’s just one of those concepts that enters your mind and leaves as fast as it came.

It sounds to me like you’re somewhat over-scrupulous.

I’m certain you didn’t commit a mortal sin, since such fleeting reactions and thoughts don’t fulfil the requirements of grave matter, consent and understanding - especially if you can’t remember it now!

At worst it was a momentary uncharitable thought. On its own it’s nothing that would prevent you from receiving Communion.

Let me say this: I’ve met good and holy priests who say far worse out loud!

jesus4ever, based on this and some of your other posts, it appears you are developing a case of scrupulosity. This is a crippling spiritual disease that can simply drive you nuts! I suggest you do all you can to nip it in the bud. The first and best strategy is to tell your confessor about it and follow his advice to the letter. Obedience is one of the finest medicines against scrupulosity.

God bless you.

it wasn’t a thought, just saying something to myslef without saying it out loud. i remember thinking after it habbened i may have committed a sin here. but i want to know is this venial or mortal sin. after it habbened i know it was wrong and didnt continue it. it only went for one or two seconds

Everyone says things to themselves “sotto voce” (under their breath). It’s the same thing as having a thought. People get irritated and mutter or grumble to themselves about others. On other occasions you see someone attractive and say inwardly “ooh nice!” or similar.

You cannot stop these things since they are part of our instincts.

What matters is our choices about what to do when they’ve happened.

You did not act in an impure way. You did not deliberately carry on thinking/whispering to yourself on the subject.

YOU DID NOT SIN.

You’re getting much too obsessed with this. You need to let go of this constant double-checking of yourself or you’re going to spiral into intense scrupulosity that will do nothing except damage you and close you off to the graces that God freely offers you.

yea when i relized what i may have said within myself i didn’t continue it I was just relizing it how grave it might have been.

I did it with out thinking. but it wasn’t oh nice or wow. it think it was more then that.

i know the word sex was mentioned does that change anything. i think it was something like sex with her. similar to this

The same applies.

I can be walking down the road and on the other side a pretty girl might be walking the other way. I might think to myself, instinctively, “ooh, I wouldn’t mind sex with her” or even simply “phwoar”. But then I’d catch myself, realise it would be totally disrespectful to continue on towards entertaining myself with that thought and I let it go. If I ‘said’ it to myself, even if I moved my lips and said it out loud to thin air, it’s the same thing.

People can ‘talk to themselves’ spontaneously in the same way that they ‘think to themselves’. Neither one is objectively sinful if you catch yourself and stop yourself… (Although, if you talk to yourself aloud you do run the risk of other people hearing you, but you’ve said you didn’t say it out loud, so that doesn’t apply here).

It’s really not that possible for a random thought that lasts only a couple of seconds and then goes away and is forgotten to affect you. You haven’t actually DONE anything.

Scruples are a terrible thing.

You cannot live your life terrified of the possibility of certain types of thoughts. To do that gives them a power over you far in excess of the influence they actually have when they happen. You must simply forget them. They come. They go. You clearly want to live according to how Our Lord wants you to. Your intentions are good, true and honourable. You do not, apparently, have the inclination or desire to deliberately sin, even if you, like the rest of us, fail from time to time. In fact I’d say you’re probably better than many in this respect. Some people aren’t so concerned. But there is a point where you become TOO concerned and you stop letting yourself live the life God gave you.

I have read nothing whatsoever from you that suggests to me you’ve actually committed any mortal sin. Nothing at all.

By all means, make an appointment with a priest and discuss it with him. It’s what he’s there for: it’s the service to the world he signed on for in order to provide. But I’m as certain as I can be that he won’t tell you any different to what I have.

You’re a good lad. Ok?

Betsy,
Great advise.

Jesus4ever,
Quit beating yourself up and analyzing this to death.
Say and act of contrition now…
Go to confession as soon as you are able…
Be guided by your confessor. This is his job and not ours…

Peace
James

i have made a decision and decided that since i didn’t continueit further i dont think i need to go to confession. I had holy communion today and at few times after and up to now i have sort of went over it to see if i am ok.

at times i think to myself what if I am thinking that i knew what i was doing during it then decided to stop.
But the fact that after it happened i said to myself i may have sined here and not continue I think i am ok. may GOD have mercy on me.

Important for you to find a regular confessor who can help you …keep you from scruples etc…or help you out of em…

Please! You absolutely need to follow this advice. Scrupulosity is a downhill road to despair and depression as well as spiritual sickness. I have been there persoonally as a young man. It is not pretty. I followed advice similar to that above. As far as I am concerned it saved my life.:):)👍
