Hi
I understand that taking the Lord’s name in vain and cursing at other people is sinful, however I have heard that cursing out of frustration is at most, crude but not sinful.
In the years before I was baptized and I was looking into the Bible, I came to the conclusion that all cursing was sinful and I promised God that I wouldn’t say such things. Now after learning that expletives not directed at anyone does not constitute a sin, am I still bound by that promise I made before I was baptized?
(I spoke to my confessor about this and said I was okay, though crude language is never a good thing)

Well if your confessor said you are okay, then you are okay. Cursing isn’t good, but it isn’t always a sin. Maybe you should promise God that you’ll try your best to refrain from cursing.

Off topic

What I think is funny is that we somehow assigned a level of vulgarity for each cuss word. For example I can say “darn it” in a fit of anger next to somebody and have it be acceptable. But if I say “da _ _ _” then I’m being rude and vulgar. Both are said for the same reason, however one just so happens to be more vulgar than the other. Anybody else ever notice that?

Crude language is never a good thing, and neither is second-guessing your confessor.

What was your purpose in making that promise to God?

From the little that you shared it seems to me that you intended to lead a better, more virtuous life. Is that still the case? If ‘yes’ then it would be good to maintain your original high standard out of love for God.

God bless

You’re right, it is still my intention to lead a more virtuous life. I just wanted to know that in the event I do utter a curse (trying not to of course) not out of spite against anyone, it is not a sin.
