A proposal for the "holy, Holy Holy" at Mass

Nope.

And we don’t take a vote or a poll and decide what to do at mass. You cannot just do whatever you want.

Exactly. It’s a slippery slope when people begin entertaining the mindset that the Church and the Mass are things to be customized based on preferences.

Decisions in the Church are not made by “majority rule”… they are made through the guidance and protection of the Holy Spirit.

Us as the laity are called to participate, not to dictate 👍

Another concern is that when we try to customize or add to the Mass, it can inadvertently cause a distraction for the congregation, becoming a moment of confusion, anxiety, embarrassment, resentment, etc… that serves to detract from the mass instead of enhance it as was originally intended.

Growing up I was very shy about going to Mass because my family didn’t attend but once or twice a year. I hated not knowing what was expected and what was something particular to the parish I was visiting. I still dislike “doing the wrong thing”, and so I wish things were more uniform when it comes to gestures.
 
Maybe you can check with your diocese to see if they have a Charismatic Renewal/Mass. It’s not my cup of tea at all but I know some dioceses have occasional events and it might be just the type of experience you are looking for.
 
If somebody wants to raise their arms in the air during Mass, have at it, just don’t make me do it. I’ve seen enough charismatic Catholics who were “into” gestures.

I personally am not. I’m not even comfortable doing the raised-hands position during the Our Father. To me, that’s for the priest to do. I am more comfortable folding my hands. If the person next to me really wants to hold hands and grabs mine, I’ll go along with that, but otherwise, I prefer to use the same prayer position I’ve used for decades and save the arm gestures and such for my next rock concert or sports rally. If somebody wants to host a Pep Rally for Jesus out in the parking lot, I’ll go out there and clap and cheer and jump up and down waving a Jesus towel. But not in the Mass!
 
Haha, no disrespect to the OP but I thought for sure this was sarcasm…I’m not going to get into the whole hand-holding/orans posture debate…coming from Judaism I can be a bit of a Pharisee when it comes to protocol…😉 Last week in Mass though, we had a large new family visiting and they not only held hands during the Lord’s Prayer, they held them straight in the air like an extended stadium “wave.” I’m not perfect, so I must admit, my thoughts on this weren’t entirely charitable. YMMV

So, to give my $.02 Gd forbid, please let’s not start this trend! 😛

Although saying or singing the words is the primary way to participate in that part of the Mass, I think a bodily gesture during these “holy” words is a great way to show assent to the words that are spoken. First, it echoes the previous words of “life your hearts to the Lord). Second, those words are not just a filler of prayer, they’re an enormous affirmation of faith,hope, and love” “Hosannah” – “God saves” – what a climactic expression in the Mass. Third, more primitively, our outstretched hands and arms represent the palm branches that were used to acclaim Jesus entry into Jerusalem.

Not to go off topic (maybe the Mods can break this off), but why?

I’m not saying you can’t or shouldn’t do these things (or not do, as the case may be), my question is WHY?

Why would you not want to participate in the singing of certain parts of the Mass, and why would you WANT to pray a rosary, instead of listening and participating in Mass. 🤷

I am not making any judgments, just curious as to why someone would choose to do this.

I am also curious- did you grow up prior to VII and the Mass change?
