It’s tough to jump into this thread within a thread, but it’s an interesting subject.
There’s something missing in this discussion about lying.
The issue has some resolution in case of U.S. military being prisoners of war. They can and do make statements under duress and these are not self-incriminating statements. I guess that’s the point.
Statements made under life-threatening duress are simply not self-incriminating.
does anybody watch the History Channel? There are many stories. Most people will say “you do what you have to, to survive.”
When you testify in court, there is no such immunity. You are compelled under the penalties for perjury to tell the truth.
What about the car salesman? Read the fine print when you buy a car. The fine print says that all verbal statements by the salesman are void and only the written terms are contractual.
The saleslady tells the dowdy matron “you look good in that” or “that looks good on you.” It’s biased testimony.
