A question about cheating

I am wondering something: is it a mortal or venial sin to cheat on a routine quiz in class? I have heard opinions that cheating is a sin in the same sense as lying, venial when it does not harm others and mortal when it does. But don’t all lies harm others indirectly since you appear to be better by comparison? Alternately, wouldn’t all lies be considered venial since they eventually come out and make you look worse? I’m not trying to reason a mortal sin into a venial one or anything just to understand.
 
No expert here but I’m thinking test cheating would be mortal if you stole someone answers without permission …venial if there was collusion you were allowed you to peek.
 
As for me, it may fall as venial but why cheat 🙂 You don’t want to fail naturally…Then better study 🙂
