I went to Confession recently to clear all the mortal sins off my soul. Because I had spent some time as a non-denominational Christian, I confessed schism, heresy, and apostasy (because I had spent some time doubting my faith and being atheistic/agnostic).

I read today that the Code of Canon Law, 1364, says that those three sins incur the same degree of excommunication as an abortion.

I know you can’t be excommunicated without knowing that there is a serious penalty attached to the sins and I only knew about this today (abortion is the only sin I knew of that incurred a penalty), but now I’m pretty concerned. Does confession clear this sort of thing up?
