Well hello again… My second thread here. 😃 Again I have some questions. Well, only one, but it has been bothering me for a long time. (for the record, I am still an atheist, but this has nothing to do with this thread)

You see, my father was the source of my old faith. He is considered to be a very good Catholic, and he has studied the Catholic church and its teachings a lot… But I personally don’t trust his judgment at all in anything regarding the real world, and he is probably the biggest reason of my lack of religion.

So why is that? First of all, he doesn’t treat me too well…which is another topic… (and I will write a thread about it, maybe tomorrow) but the main thing is his complete and utter **blind ** faith! He is a fundamentalist to begin with, and probably the worst sort. He does not consider what anyone says to him, if it happens to contradict his world view. Even if it is 100% clear that he is wrong. For example, he says that 99% of the scientists today don’t believe in evolution, (I have no Idea where he got that from) when it is the exact opposite! But this is going a bit off topic. This thread is not to discuss evolution, I just mentioned it to explain why I don’t take my father seriously.

Anyways, to my question…he also says that every catholic, and honest person knows that the Freemasons are controlling the world, and that they have caused the Catholic church to lose some of its power. He says they rule America, make all films in Hollywood…everything like this. Now, I just want a confirmation, that this is not what Catholics believe. These claims are not supported by anything I have ever read or seen. (or heard)

So, are Freemasons according to Catholics ruling the world, as my father claims?

Side note; I hope this is the right place to post this thread, and that it doesn’t violate any rules. 🤷

There probably are SOME Catholics who believe that – you’ll find conspiracy theorists in every walk of life, in every religion/denomination/etc. But no, that is not a teaching of the Church, nor is it a widespread view.

The short answer to your question is No. The Catholic Church does not teach that the Free Masons “rule” the world. However, Catholics are prohibited from becoming free masons by cannon law because Free Masonary holds some beliefs that are contrary to Cathloic Faith. Not because they rule the world.

For some perspective:

'There is another explanation for the rapid diffusion of the Communistic ideas now seeping into every nation, great and small, advanced and backward, so that no corner of the earth is free from them. This explanation is to be found in a propaganda so truly diabolical that the world has perhaps never witnessed its like before. It is directed from one common center. It is shrewdly adapted to the varying conditions of diverse peoples. It has at its disposal great financial resources, gigantic organizations, international congresses, and countless trained workers. It makes use of pamphlets and reviews, of cinema, theater and radio, of schools and even universities. Little by little it penetrates into all classes of the people and even reaches the better-minded groups of the community, with the result that few are aware of the poison which increasingly pervades their minds and hearts.

A third powerful factor in the diffusion of Communism is the conspiracy of silence on the part of a large section of the non-Catholic press of the world. We say conspiracy, because it is impossible otherwise to explain how a press usually so eager to exploit even the little daily incidents of life has been able to remain silent for so long about the horrors perpetrated in Russia, in Mexico and even in a great part of Spain; and that it should have relatively so little to say concerning a world organization as vast as Russian Communism. This silence is due in part to shortsighted political policy, and is favored by various occult forces which for a long time have been working for the overthrow of the Christian Social Order.’

Pope Pius XI, ‘Divini Redemptoris’, 1937

You won’t be able to discuss things with your father until you’ve walked where he’s walked and read what he’s read. We have to respect our parents… 🙂

I’ve heard this a number of times before from whacky conspiracy theorists… except you’d have to substitute ‘Jews’ for ‘Freemasons’.

Both statements are equally absurd, in my estimation.

You can find lists of powerful people categorized by their associations with different organizations.

Just keep in mind that correlation=/=causation. They don’t rule the world.

In my opinion, the Free Masons may be a group of significant power but they do not control the world. There is only one being who ultimately controls the world - God, of course 😛

There will always be opposition to Truth, just as we always have the personal choice to believe or to ignore Truth, so I don’t really feel threatened by any group no matter how powerful they might become.

That’s my take as a lay Catholic.

I, for one, do not believe that Freemasons control the world.

Actually, my father says that the Jews have allied twith the Freemasons. 🤷

Freemasonry, at least historically, has been openly anti-Catholic. In the 1800s, I think, they published a plan to destroy and dismantle the Catholic Church by liberalizing and secularizing the world enough so that impressionable young men and women entering into positions of leadership within the Church would eventually enact changes suiting Freemasonry agendas. Has this happened? I don’t know. There was a thread on this, I’ll see if I can find.

It is a shame to read about your loss of faith. I hope that you will return to the faith one day. Don’t hesitate to PM me if you ever want to talk.

There are also a lot of men in powerful positions that are also Freemasons. This would give greedance to the thought of Freemasons controlling the world. Its possible, but improbable.

Freemasons do not control the world. Neither do the Jesuits (just in case that was a back-up conspiracy theory:)).

If youre also going to tell me that the Knights of Columbus don’t either, Im quickly going to withdraw my application… 😉

Well what about the Ancient Order of Hibernians? Them Irish Catholics are sneaky little devils.

well here we go again. Where did you hear that the Freemasons are openly anti-catholic???

I’ve been a Freemason for years and I’ve never, ever heard or read of anything that remotely can be considered anti-Catholic. While I can’t speak for the Masons of the 1800’s I can speak for today and I’m not sure where you got this so-called plan to destroy and dismantle the Catholic Church. I’m sure the Roman Catholic members of my lodge would have something to say about that.

Out of interest…if you are a Freemason, then mind telling what you do as a member? I have tried to search about it, but I couldn’t really find anything.

Side note; 2 people voted ‘Yes’. Interesting…

We do mostly fund raising and donate the money tor various charities and work as individuals to become better men through studies of morality; Additionally we do have a number of social events for the Brothers and their families.

Re: Side note; 2 Some people do buy into the conspiracy theory; just like some see flying saucers at least once per week.

A good site for all the information you want on Freemasonry is:

I think Dad is wrong on this point. Our Jewish brothers and sisters make all the films in Hollywood. Some of our Founding Fathers may have been Masons, if you believe Hollywood films - but the Supreme Court is close to half Catholic and the next biggest religion demographic is Jewish. The US Senate is 1/4 Catholic and the US House of Reps is 30% Catholic.

I voted NO on the poll, but I want to add a qualification. Many popes have written about Freemasonry in the past, including up to Pius the XII who died in 1958, so it’s not like some ancient medievel superstition that caused them to be wary of the Freemasons. The popes saw a genuine conflict between the ideals of Freemasonry and those of Catholicism. They basically have to do with what we would call religious indifferentism, an “all paths lead to God” kind of mentality. Catholicism Being a revealed religion, you can see why that made the popes nervous. That’s why today Catholics are still forbidden to join.
As far as Freemasons secretly running the world, I don’t think they need to, because a lot of their ideals have triumphed in the modern world. If there ever was a conspiracy, then the masons have been victims of their own success. The only masons I know are my elderly uncles and as far as I know, their main activity at the lodge is playing shuffleboard and drinking beer. If they’re secretly running the world then I’m not too worried.
You also have to take into account that Freemasonry in Europe was much different than in the United States. Freemasonry in Europe openly declared itself an enemy of the Church in a way the American branch never did.
