Say I gave up something for Lent, but I ended up failing to live up to that.

Is that a mortal sin?
 
It depends on what you gave up. If you gave up something that is gravely sinful then yes it is a mortal sin. If you gave something up that isn’t sinful, then no it is not a sin. If you fail in your Lenten penance don’t be discouraged and don’t give up!

no because it is not a requirement that you give something up, other than the very minimal fast and abstinence requirements
