A Question About Papal Balloting Procedure

Here’s my question…

After each inconclusive ballot, are the elector cardinals given a “tally” as to whom received the most votes in the previous ballott?

That was a very informative article.

However, I didn’t see anything in it that said whether the cardinals recevied a tally of who received how many votes. My guess is that they do receive such a tally, otherwise how could they know if a consensus was being approached toward any particular person.

The votes are counted by three cardinals and the name on each ballot is announced out loud. The cardinals keep tally on pads, which are also burned with the ballots.

explains some things that go on, not directly related to your question but kind of alongside it. It sounds a little “politicky” in tone but the last paragraph does point out that ultimately the Holy Spirit will have the final say.

I suppose some of the stuff that sounds political at first glance could also be looked upon as the human level of reasoning which has some legitimate part to play, as long as politics doesn’t try to trump God. :twocents:
 
The votes are read out individually for each ballot so that the Cardinals can confirm the results of the count.
