Just a quick question…

(I’d look it up but I figured it would be better to get information from practicing people here)

Do the Eastern Catholics share the same saints as the Eastern Orthodox (non Catholic)?

Also, do they also share the saints of the Catholic Church? -Meaning do they pray to saints of the Latin rite.

Are there saints in your church that aren’t particularly known or celebrated in the Latin rite that you think Latin rite Catholics should know about? Oh- also, are Latin rite Catholics allowed to pray to these saints?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

There is a book called The Menaion which is a liturgical book with the hymns and prayers for the saints’ feasts and commemorations on the fixed calendar. The Eastern Catholics continue this from their Orthodox roots. There are some new saints (Eastern Catholic Martyrs) also. There are some common observances between the various eastern Catholic and Latin Catholic churches.

Yes, Eastern Catholics venerate post-schism Orthodox saints. Byzantine Catholics, for example, use the Byzantine liturgical calendar just as the eastern Orthodox do, and that calendar includes the liturgical commemoration and veneration of post-schism Orthodox saints.

I suppose individual eastern Catholics may indeed have personal devotions to certain post-schism Latin saints (St. Francis of Assisi, for instance?). But liturgically, no, since the calendar they’re using - as mentioned above - wouldn’t come from a rite that venerates post-schism Latin saints.

I could be wrong about that last point, especially since - as Vico points out - some eastern Catholic churches have added post-schism eastern Catholic saints. I suppose they could add Latin ones, too, though I doubt that happens.

I’m a Latin Catholic myself, but I think we Latins have much to learn from St. Gregory Palamas (from the Byzantine tradition) and St. Severus of Antioch (from the Oriental tradition).
Oh- also, are Latin rite Catholics allowed to pray to these saints?
Latin Catholics are not forbidden to ask these saints for their prayers; thus, we’re allowed. It wouldn’t make sense to say otherwise, since our brothers and sisters in full communion with us do so.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
You’re welcome.

Hey, just wanted to say thank you to all who posted here. I love your suggestions and will be taking a closer look at those things mentioned! Thank you for your help!

The feast of Our Lady of Guadeloupe is on the calendar of the Byzantine Catholic Church.
