So sometimes when I’m talking in a normal conversation I will say “Oh myGod.” I know it’s not good, and I’ve been trying to stop. I try to use oh my gosh as much as I can but sometimes “oh my God” just slips out. It is just used by people so much that it has become normal. I looked online to see how bad it is to say it, but a lot of people said that God will know if you said it directly to him or it just slipped out. I’m trying to stop but I’m just trying to to make sure that I’m not committing a grave sin if I say it on accident.

Well, at least you know it’s wrong, and I’ll confirm it–you shouldn’t say it. But I would chalk this up to picking up a bad habit rather than endangering your soul, but I’d have a conversation with your confessor just the same.

Meanwhile, make a conscious plan to break the habit. A swear jar perhaps? Maybe put a rubber band on your wrist and snap it when you say it?

It’s not possible to commit a grave sin by accident. In order for a sin to be mortal, you must know that you’re about to do something seriously wrong and fully intend to do it anyway. Slipping in your speech and saying “oh my God” by accident is a far cry from obstinately deciding to profane God’s name. See the difference? You’re moving in the right direction. Don’t worry if you accidentally mess up. Trust in God’s mercy and love for you and keep moving closer to him.

I’ve been told by my spiritual director that that would not constitute a grave sin.

that used to happen o me too. try not to worry about too much

while it’s not good to throw around God’s name superfluously, like others have said, it’s not the same as intentionally taking his name in vain if it’s accidentally done. something I tried was to avoid songs, tv shows and even people that I knew tend to use it a lot. after a while, once I got out of the habit, then I was stronger around it when I encountered and didn’t slip in to it easily anymore.

hopefully that helps. at least your conscious of it

Yes. It’s refreshing to hear someone caring enough to attempt to break this habit. 👍 Good for you! Your intentions are sincere, and it will just take practice to rewire that habit center of the brain! I’ve been working on eliminating the common “bombs” from my speech and have seen progress - and on occasion I slip. You’re an inspiration to try harder! 😉

One thing that may help you kick the habit would be to say a prayer every time you hear someone use that phrase.

I like to turn to the Divine Praises - “Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man. Blessed be the Name of Jesus.” I’ll do the same whenever Our Lady’s name is taken in vain ("Blessed be the Name of Mary, Virgin and Mother), though this is far less frequent.

At my job, I hear Our Lord’s Name taken in vain quite frequently, so in one respect, it does help me to add a lot of prayers to my daily routine. Eventually, you will get to the point where it bothers you so much to hear other people use these phrases that you will stop using them yourself.
