Folks,
Code:
I'm writing a quick article about a common misconception in protestant circles about Catholic worship, and I can sure use a bit of help. Simply put: Can anyone quote a scripture passage in which God punishes someone because they worshiped something by mistake? Meaning they did not intend to worship this thing but by their actions they ended up worshiping something other than God.
Or at the least, could you quote a case in which someone was punished by God because they sinned without knowing what they were doing?

Thanks!

Don’t know if this will be of any help to you or not but keeping in mind that even though our sin is forgiven does not mean that we will not have due punishment.

Num 15 27-29 about a man who sins inadvertently

Jesus remark at the crucifixion in Lk 23:34

Sorry if these don’t help.

I don’t have much time now, but I do have something that may be at odds with the OP. In John 15:22 Jesus says, If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. I will usually refer to this passage when makeing the point that those who have never heard the Gospel will be shown a great deal of mercy. The Catechism teaches us that they will be judged according to how they respond to God according to what knowledge they have been given.

There is a great deal of slack given by God to those who seek truth but do not posses the completeness of it, while God will judge much more sternly those who have had all the resources to follow Him but have chosen to waste it and remain ignorant or are not humble enough to make those adjustments in their Faith to conform to God’s way.

This doesn’t exactly answer your question, Deacon Harbey, but when I was a protestant believer, they thought Catholics were in the same league as those who worshipped the golden calf in the OT and greek gods and goddesses in the NT.

Yes, sadly I have encountered many that have that impression. Sometimes I think is a kind of “religious racism” where it does not matter what you say you are an idolater just because you are Catholic. It does not matter if our God is Trinitarian, whose second person became flesh, dwelled among us and died for our sins, rose on the third day and ascended into heaven, we are still idolaters. You can reason with someone that is willing to reason with you but you cannot reason with bigotry.

I don’t have time to look for the passage but there was an incident where a person reached out to stop the ark from falling and was killed because he was told not to touch it. I am not sure that is what you are looking for but that is what came to mind.

What puzzles me is that OSAS say they don’t have to obey the commandments but, they hold us to them, especially the first three that pertain to God, mostly us being idolaters. They only pass on what they are mistakingly taught. So, even though this is not found in scripture, would this not be a case where someone could possibly be punished due to ignorance ?🤷

The only two things I can think of, which aren’t totally what you are asking for, but here are a couple of thoughts of what a Protestant might use are:
  1. When Uzzah touched the Ark, and he quickly died.
He thought he was doing something good by steadying the Ark and helping it not to fall to the ground, but he disobeyed God’s command not to touch it.
  2. When God had Moses make the bronze serpent to heal the Israelites from snake bites, and then many years later, the Israleites began to bow down before it, it was destroyed because of all the Idol worship going on in the country.
