What does it really mean by “taking God’s name in vain”?

Can we just say “oh my god” randomly? Many people, even theology teachers, do that.

If you have a voice, of course you “can”. If the question is should we, I firmly believe not in otherwise casual conversation. Now if someone just pushed you off a cliff or you just witnessed a murder or horrific traffic accident, I think you would be justified.

I am currently urging my 28 year old daughter to stop this habit she didn’t aquire at home.

To take God’s Name in vain means to use His Name for evil, for cursing, for shock value, for disrespect, and for reasons other than religiously. This also includes taking in vain the names of Christians and holy things.

Blessed be the Most Holy Name of God!
