*A wonderful book I read a few years ago had stories of present day peoples experiences with saying the rosary. It also included a wonderful section on the history of the Rosary… One thing that was so helpful to me was the understanding that when all the mysteries are placed together? That they are a thumbnail scetch of the gospels and our salvation history]… It is for those new and old coming to learn the rosary or wanting to hear some uplifting stories of its power and place… I highly recommend it:

On one hand I understand why you’re saying about formulaic prayer, but I see the wisdom in these types of prayers.
There’s a lot of wisdom in repetitive phrases, witness the popularity of TM.
Sometimes I just pray the Rosary for the comfort it brings me.
Most of the time, in fact.
I could be wrong but I don’t think that a person HAS to pray the rosary to be a good Catholic but it brings such peace and comfort that I consider it a gift.
Just my opinion.

So many are against formulaic prayers or repetitious prayers, but, how did we learn our basic math facts, such as multiplication tables which we use throughout our life? Why memorize anything, then? In my opinion, it’s the same with formulaic and repetitious prayers - the memorization allows us to strengthen our Faith throughout our lives, much as memorization of our multiplication tables, or add, subtract, multiply, divide strengthens our math skills and allows us to understand deeper.
