I have read that it is a nifty idea to pray The Rosary daily. Fine with me. BUT…does it have to be the standard 5 decade Dominican Rosary? Would it be OK to substitute another Rosary, such as the Servite or the Franciscan, once or twice a week? :gopray2:

Yes, either of those would be fine. I’m partial to the Franciscan Crown myself. It focuses on the 7 joys of the Blessed Mother.

I had never heard of the Servite or Franciscan Rosary before - but a quick Google search gave me lots of information. Thanks for passing those along.

I don’t see any problem with saying those rosaries as you see fit. The new decades of the Rosary that Pope John Paul II added seem to fit nicely with the ones you mentioned - I think it is a great idea.

From time to time we say a Pro-Life rosary as well - where each decade/intention asks for conversions of hearts to the pro-life cause, etc.

Well, my question (perhaps not written clearly enough) concerned saying these other Rosaries in place of, not in addition to, the Dominican Rosary.

Say, for example, this schedule:

Monday - Joyful Mysteries
Tuesday - Luminious Mysteries
Wednesday - Sorrowful Mysteries
Thursday - Glorious Mysteries
Friday - The Servite Rosary
Saturday - The Franciscan Rosary
Sunday - TBA

Mother Mary has made it Nixonic (Perfectly Clear ) that she wants us to recite her Rosary daily. I just wanted to know if it was OK to add a little variety:o

Not sure I ever heard of a problem with this. The “sorrowful” mysteries seem to go with Friday in my mind…and the “Glorious” with Saturday or Sunday - but I’d bet that Mary’s command is more towards “praying” - so the fact that you are praying these each day is the important part.

I’ve never seen this addressed anywhere - but I doubt it would be a problem.

Pope John Paul II wrote a great apostolic letter on the Rosary a few years ago - maybe you could read that and see if it mentions this at all. It has been awhile since I read it - not sure it mentioned these or not.

However it might be mixed up (and I don’t know if that even makes sense) Friday should still be the Sorrowful Mysteries and Sunday the Glorious Mysteries.
Personally I would stick to the normal Rosary and in addition say the others.

I’ve been saying the Servite (Seven Sorrows) Rosary this month, in honour of the feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows which fell last week.

If you don’t have time to do both, I personally would say two or three decades each day of the Dominican Rosary (thus heeding our Lady’s injunction) and one each day of each of the others.

Just my :twocents:

As a further idea, change the where and not just the what. Recite your rosary:
  1. On a walk
  2. On a run (my favorite)
  3. In the car
  4. While doing chores
  5. While grocery shopping
Try reciting Divine Mercy too.

I don’t see a problem. It is still a rosary, and most of the mysteries are actually the same. The Franciscan is just an expanded Joyful, and the Servite is just an expanded Sorrowful. Why would adding on extra mysteries ever be a problem? That would mean praying all 20 decades would be worse than praying just 5… makes no sense. So adding the extra couple mysteries would actually be good, right? More prayer is always good! 😃

They’re fundamentally different - the focus in the Rosary is on Christ. The focus in the Seven Sorrows and the Franciscan Crown is on Mary.

The first is extensively promoted by the Church, and has been for hundreds of years and endorsed and urged by Our Lady in all her approved apparitions. She’s never said ‘pray the Seven Sorrows daily’ or ‘Pray the Franciscan Crown daily’

Important differences there.

I don’t necessarily agree that one is centered on Christ and the other isn’t. One could argue that two of the Glorious Mysteries (Assumption and Coronation of the BVM) are not therefore “Christ-centered.” But we know that they all ultimately point to Christ’s sacrifice and glory.

That said, and even though I love the Crown and Sorrows rosaries (and I’m a secular Franciscan), I think it’s best to focus on the daily 5 decades and leave the others for special occasions. I try to do them when I have time to do a holy hour, or on other occasions, like this month’s Lady of Sorrows feast…and St. Francis’ feast is in a few weeks.

what other rosary’s are there.you know what i did see rosary’s in book .they alot smaller.are those the ones you are talking about?and which one’s do you say 2wice a week?im intrested.🙂

I wanted to say thanks for posting this. I had never heard of the Franciscan or Servite rosaries. Now I’m working them both into my weekly routine.

Not really. The Servite Rosary is aboout Mary’s Sorrows, yes. Sorrows caused by the sufferings of Jesus. The Franciscan Crown aka Seraphic Rosary concentrates on Mary’s Joys, centered around Christ’s life.

And whilst she did say “pray the rosary daily”, did she mean ONLY the Dominican Rosary? That was my question:)

I asked a nun from Portugal regarding Our Lady of Fatima’s request to pray the Rosary daily. The answer is that we pray the five decades every day. I was wondering if Our Lady of Fatima wanted us to pray five decades or if it was the whole Rosary (15 or 20 decades). Our Lady of Fatima spoke in Portuguese and used a word for the Rosary that meant five decades. And it is the Dominican Rosary that Our Lady of Fatima was talking about.

It is very admirable to pray the seven sorrows or the seven dolors. And there are many other prayers that are very special. I really like the “Anima Christi” prayer, but I pray the Rosary much more often.

I encourage you to read Pope John Paul II’s “Rosarium Virginis Mariae” which is on the vatican web site vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_20021016_rosarium-virginis-mariae_en.html
I first read it a bit over a year ago and I was also in RCIA at the time. I found it easier to read and understand in the stillness of our church’s chapel, sitting near the tabernacle.

Thank you for this link. Read it, and I suppose it IS the Dominican Rosary every day, with others as time permits.

I read it when it came out in our diocese’s newspaper. It was a few pages long (full pages) and I thought it took a lot of brain cells and effort. I did not find it easy to understand everything. I was in RCIA at the time. However, I do think that I learned a lot by reading it. Pope John Paul II is so special.

If you took time and understood it all, I am impressed.

You may want to read “The Secret of the Rosary” by St. Louis Grignion de Montfeort. See footnote #12 of “Rosarium Virginis Mariae”. Pope John Paul II is not the only Pope who has quoted from that book. When I began reading it, I felt compelled to read and re-read each chapter (rose). One rose each day, reading one new rose and re-reading yesterday’s rose. As Pope John Paul II wrote “We need but mention Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, the author of an excellent work on the Rosary, …”
