I’m a sophomore in college now, living on campus, and boy do I get exposed to some interesting things sometimes!
I’m recently single, and since I’ve been dumped, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking on questions of relationships, chastity, marriage, etc.
As a younger teen, I had a pretty puritanical perspective regarding dating. Since I’ve gotten older, and been in a relationship, I’ve been struggling to really figure out exactly what it means to be chaste in a precise way, not just physically, but emotionally.
I have taken the approach of the question, “Well, what can I do without sinning?” but I feel that this question is an incomplete perspective. My question, then, for all you married Catholics, is this: What were your relationships like when you were young? Both with exes, and with your current spouse? How did those past relationships affect your current marriage? And the question I’m most interested in: now that you’re married, do you have any REGRETS from your time dating? (Additionally, what are your thoughts and feelings about your spouse’s past dating experiences?)
I think that the greatest benefit of chastity is that it preserves intimacy and trust for a lifelong relationship, rather than spreading it out over many people who come and go and take pieces of ourselves with them. So I’m trying to order my relationships with the opposite sex through that lens; how am I going to feel about what I do today, when I’m married in 5-10 years?
Please be totally honest, I can’t wait to read your responses!
