A question for my fellow EMHC's

My pastor is a very wise man that usually reads the crowd pretty well. Half of the time, he gives a communion instruction, and does it in a great way. He just read this crowd wrong I think.

It actually brings tears to my eyes to read that you found a Host in the parking lot. Every day in my morning prayers I spiritually prostrate myself before the Eucharist, everywhere in the world, with all the angels. I tell Jesus that I adore and reverence Him in reparation for all the offenses against Him.

I have been told that some use the Host for evil things. I think, while I’m aghast that any one would desacrate the Host in that way, I would rather they leave it in the parking lot than to intentionally do something evil with it.

We have to PRAY for the holiness of our country, and our churches!

The moral quandary about whether to give Christ to non-Catholics or those in mortal sin, etc., seems to me a good reason to reduce the number of EMHCs and have the priest and deacon be the primary distributors of the Eucharist. I know in our parish, we have probably 20 EMHC’s at each Sunday Mass. It’s a little out of control.

Remember that Jesus did NOT pass over Judas at the Mystical Supper, though He knew what Judas had planned for Him.

Behold how the Lord surrendered Himself to protect Judas’s reputation; his own works would expose him in due time.

And as one of the Desert Fathers said, “You say you have seen your brother’s sins. Have you also seen his repentance?”

I cannot see into another person’s heart, and (with respect) I really doubt if you can, either. How do you not know that sometime during this very Mass, your relative didn’t experience the grace of conversion and faith–and you were unaware of it.

It is not your duty to fence the table; the spiritual burden lies totally on the communicant.

I was asked to be a lector and EMHC at my grandfather’s funeral mass. The priest was wheelchair bound and didn’t distribute the Holy Eucharist. My brother had not been to Mass in years and was a pall bearer, seated in the front row. He presented himself and I gave it to him. He said “Amen” and consumed it as he’d been taught when he was a child.

I had previously been told by our priest that in such a situation we are not to withhold the Host because we do not know the state of anyones’ soul. We can later say something to them like, “I’m so happy you returned to the Catholic Church.” or “Welcome to the Catholic Church!”

Instead, I prayed at the moment and every time I think of it since then for my brother’s conversion. Had I refused, I would have been placing myself in judgement of my brother. Had I mentioned it later, my brother would have thought I was judging him. It’s just how our relationship is. I just leave it up to God in this situation and pray about it often.
