Hi,

I am just getting started (will be attending first meeting on 13Sept2009, God willing). May I ask 2 general questions?
  1. I pray the Liturgy of the Hours: Morning, Evening and Night Prayer. Would this satisfy the requirements? Would Morning and Evening Prayer alone? I work in a stressful job (pharmacist) and would have a difficult time praying the other hours. (I do pray the Angelus almost every day)
  2. When travelling, I know that the Franciscans, for example, allow a shorter version of the Office (12 Our Fathers). Do the Benedictines allow this? If so, where can I find it?
NB: I am not talking about Shorter Christian Prayer 😉

Thank you and God bless you all

I am sorry, I forgot a question 😊

I know that St Joseph’s puts out what I call a “cheat sheet” for the Liturgy of the Hours that one buys every year for around $3, and that they have special ones for the orders (Roman-Franciscan, for example).

Does a “special” guide exist for the Oblates? Roman-Benedictine, for example?

Thanks!

As we say on the Monastic Life list, pray as you can, not as you can’t!

If you want to know about this, let me know.

You, sir, rock!

I will do so right now:thumbsup:

Ask your pastor to return this prayer to the Mass.:):):)🙂

Holy Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our safe guard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and you, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus; have mercy on us:):):)🙂

SAINT Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our safe guard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do THOU, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the DIVINE power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who ROAM through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen

I pray that in my Rosary every day. And a Benedictine prayer as well as a Franciscan one.

Congratulations! Good for you. 🙂

As I understand it, you are in the process of becoming a Benedictine oblate. The oblate director at the monastery where you are going to be an oblate will have information for you about what the monastery recommends. You should also talk with the other oblates at your monastery. From the other oblates you will find that there are wide variations in divine office practices because each person’s situation in life is so different.

In answer to your question, perhaps the document that relates only to oblates that most specifically addresses the question “how many offices must a Benedictine oblate pray/sing each day,” is the Guidelines for Oblatesadopted at a meeting of oblate directors. Those Guidelines state:
**"[Oblates] strive each day to pray some part of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours, as the circumstances of their lives permit." **

INFORMATION ON BOOKS FOR THE DIVINE OFFICE

I like the Benedictine monastic feel of the divine office in the following two books:
Benedictine Daily Prayer (BDP)

The Monastic Diurnal (MD)
For a much shorter Benedictine divine office, you might like The Benedictine Handbook

The BDP and the MD are compared here and a review of The Benedictine Handbook is here.

Although this blog is about how I use divider tabs, you can see several pages in the BDP **here. **

I use BDP for vigils and the MD for all other offices during the day. For spiritual beauty many people say there is nothing better than the MD and I agree.

It is wonderful to meet a future oblate. I would be happy to help you in any way possible and answer any of your questions about the oblate life. God bless you. 🙂

I am so very gratreful for your reply, and your offer, fratello. I will certainly take you up on it… The MD sounds perfect.

2 further questions:

Is the “plain old” LotH enough/OK?

If not, does the MD come with a “cheat sheet/little guide” (ala St Joseph’s) that is purchased yearly (ala the $3 St Joseph’s Cheat sheet)? Please say yes, as I need all the help I can get.😉

Thanks fratello!

PS Incidentally, I had already found and bookmarked OblateSpring. The Hand of God

Luigi Daniele:
Does the MD come with a yearly “cheat sheet”?

You can buy a little book for about $2-3 every year for the “regular” LotH. Same thing for the MD?

Thanks a lot!

Lou
There are Benedictine Ordos for The Monastic Diurnal at the fine “Saints Will Arise” blog, and the huge Order of St. Benedict web site has a Benedictine Ordo here in a MS Word file. But I do not know of those little books for The Monastic Diurnal.

Here is a PDF file with excerpts from Benedictine Daily Prayer and The Monastic Diurnal — so you can see how they are set up.

And yes, the regular Liturgy of the Hours (LOH) is OK. In fact, a good friend who is also an oblate uses the LOH instead of any of the Benedictine books, such as Benedictine Daily Prayer (BDP), The Monastic Diurnal (MD) , or the simple The Benedictine Handbook.

Universalis.com gives slick LOH for the computer or handheld. I keep the

Universalis calendar with my divine office books all the time, very helpful.🙂

OK, went through the BDP and MD links. Thanks again!

I have Christian Prayer: The LotH in 1 volume and LotH in 4 volumes. I use the 1 volume version now.

A(nother) couple of questions:
  1. Is using the LotH that I have now OK?
  2. I pray Lauds, Vespers and Compline. Is that OK?
Thanks

Luigi, first of all, breathe! 🙂

I’m a Oblate who uses the 4 volume Liturgy of the Hours. The Monastery I’m attached to has no stipulations about which breviary you choose (1 volume, 4 volume LOTH; Shorter Christian Prayer, the ones Barzillai mentioned). Second, as far as I know, there is no official stance that is binding to the entire Oblates of the Benedictine Order for items like breviaries or anything like that; because each person has a different life, different Monasteries they’re attached to, etc. Therefore, Barzillai likes his Benedictine Daily Prayer, and I prefer the 4 volume Liturgy of the Hours. Some people can pray all 7 offices, whereas I have one child and one on the way; and the most I can do right now is Night Prayer (although I’m working on learning truly Morning and Evening Prayer).

Which Monastery are you going through Oblation with? The Oblate Director will inform you of your duties. Mine are:
  • to pray SOME of the Liturgy of the Hours daily (therefore, Night Prayer satisfies this)
  • to read SOME of the Holy Rule of St. Benedict daily (I have a copy of the Holy Rule that has the daily readings marked, so that’s what I do).
  • to spend some time performing* lectio divina *daily (getting better on this :D).
  • to support the Monastery in time, talent, and treasure as applicable. I do a lot of praying for them.
  • to make a yearly retreat and attend Oblate meetings when possible. Since I live 9 hours from my Monastery, I can’t attend meetings and it’s hard to make a yearly retreat. But, I have good contact with the Oblate Director and we make it work.
Barzillai’s Oblate duties may be different than mine because his Monastery is not mine. But, we’re both Oblates, through and through. We both have obedience, stability, ora et labora, constant conversion of heart and a desire to follow our Holy Father St. Benedict to be closer to God. ❤️

I’m breathing, I’m breathing:D Tad excited, TBH:o

Thanks for the reply. That makes a great deal of sense 🙂

If you are using the LotH, get yourself The St Joseph GUIDE. Makes it very easy. Costs around $3 for the booklet that is good for the year. Call your local religious bookstore early, as they sometimes run out:eek:

Thanks again,

Lou

You’re quite welcome, Lou. 😃 I was in your shoes once. gets wistful

I do have the St. Joe’s guide for my LOTH - it’s definitely handy for figuring out my page numbers. I have my friend across the state get it for me, as there’s no local religious bookstores. He’s already watching for the 2010 edition, hee hee hee.

Keep asking questions, too. And I see you’ve found the Benedictine group, so pick our brains! :tiphat:

OH OH OH! Have you read the Oblate Manual? It’s very handy and was very helpful in my formation.

That looks fantastic! Thanks a lot.

I have bookmarked it.

I have spoken with the local, what’s the word? fraternity?chapter? and am waiting for them to get back with me about which books to get.

I am trying to patient. I look at it as my first little “test”.😉

Thanks again for the link!

Congratulations on the Gift that you already know, and the the Gift that’s on the way,

I have 4 Gifts, myself 🙂

Another one:eek::o:D

I know that some third orders wear an “ourward sign”, a cross necklace or a ring.

Do the Oblates do that?

If so, what do they use? (Benedictine Crucifix, maybe???)

Ring?

Where do you get them?

Thanks (again) again. 😃

Another:eek:

I can’t seem to find a complete list of Benedictine Saints…possibly because there are different “orders” that follow the rule?

Hi Lou, at my Monastery we all wear the Medal of St. Benedict. I have mine incorporated into a Crucifix that I bought from the Monastery. An Oblate Novice gets a small grey medal, a Oblate gets a larger, colored medal. I can take a picture of my Crucifix if you want.

(Here’s a link on the Medal: osb.org/gen/medal.html)

Benedictine Saints can be found here: osb.org/gen/saints/index.html
I think this may be what you’re looking for: osb.org/gen/saints/mart.html (Benedictine Saints, Blesseds, Venerables, and Worthies, A-Z).

If you want, can you tell me why you are so drawn to the Benedictines? I love hearing stories like those. 🙂

Thank you!

The medals in color are gorgeous:eek:

That is exactly what I’m looking for! Thank you…

Why? Just seems like a good fit for me. I like that my fraternity (right word?) to be is orthodox (small “o”). A lot. I am already “doing” many of the requirements (found that out afterwards, though).
I am most drawn to the prayer life. I also love to sing, and to listen to Chant. Oh, and the brandy:D
