Hi,

There’s a question that I’ve been struggling with for months and months and I still can’t seem to figure it out. In Matthew 12, the Pharisees attributed the work of the Holy Spirit (the action of God) to the devil, and Jesus said that this is the sin that won’t be forgiven - blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. There have been times when I clearly thought that something was a deception from the devil but later found out it was actually from God… and even at the time I had these thoughts, I was thinking that maybe it’s from Him. I can’t seem to find His forgiveness for this, I mean - I can’t seem to believe that He will forgive me… sometimes I come close, but ultimately I begin to question again. I’ve read Pope John Paul II’s encyclical about the unforgiveable sin and the Catechism, etc, and it makes perfect sense to me but I still wonder… how do we know there isn’t something about attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to the devil that closes the person off from God and even if they are trying to repent, their repentance will never be true or deep enough? like… it they will never see the truth or be enlightened about what they rejected… ? I’m really struggling with this daily and it’s making it difficult to receive the Sacraments. Please share any thoughts. Thanks!

Fear not. You don’t seem like the Pharisees at all. Jesus was saying that they were squarely opposed to him and the kingdom. They had a very mature spiritual hardness that was directing them away from God’s mercy. This leads to and ends with their final impenitence. The key is that “one who blasphemes the Spirit” cannot recieve forgiveness when they refuse to repent and seek forgiveness.

It doesn’t seem like you are doing that at all. You are trying to repent and you are seeking forgiveness. Our God is all mercifull. Please trust in His mercy even if it is hard to grasp. No sin can place us beyond the reach of God’s mercy. If your sin was as mature as the Pharisees, your rebellion would have you so blind that you wouldn’t even see that you needed forgiveness. If you get to the point where you don’t think you need forgiveness, then you are in trouble. Because sins are unpardonable only when they are not confessed with contrition. I hope that helps and peace be with you.

As I understand it, and I no expert, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is turning away from God. No longer seeking His forgiveness.

Obsessing over whether or not you have blasphemed against the Holy Spirit is a symptom of scrupolosity. Do you believe that you are scrupulous?
