When I was younger, I did a shameful act. Due to mental illness, I ruined a piece of church property. It was an isolated incident. I am no longer suffering from the illness. I am wondering what the proper procedure is to make amends.

The fact you realize you are in need of GOD’s mercy is wonderful. I would suggest doing an examination of conscience and experience the mercy of Jesus in the sacrament of confession. When you meet with the priest ask him to help you be sure you are making a good confession. It is very much a healing process. 👍
