All right, this might be a little bit of a lengthy post, so hang in here with me. šŸ˜‰ This is going to be tough for me…

So a couple of weeks ago I committed a sin against the sixth commandment (it was technically not the sin of masturbation, but it was close). I felt sorry for it afterwards, but I didn’t think that it was a mortal sin (although I planned on confessing it next time I went to confession).

Between then and the next time I went to confession, it occurred to me that this could have been a mortal sin. Since I wasn’t sure, I went to Communion anyway the next few times I went to Mass.

When I finally got around to going to confession last Saturday, I confessed the original sin, but I wasn’t sure if I should confess that I received Communion with a mortal sin on my soul. Ever since that I’ve been eaten up with guilt that I should have confessed it, and I did not receive Communion this morning at Sunday Mass.

I guess my question is, was the original sin a mortal sin (even if I didn’t think so at the time)? And after I started feeling guilty about the first sin, was it a mortal sin to receive Communion?

I’m sorry this post is not very coherent… but I would love any help and prayers you could give me. This whole thing is messing with my prayer life, and I plan on going to confession this Saturday if possible. Thank you!

In my humble opinion, since full knowledge that the sin IS grave is a necessary requirement of a mortal sin, and you didn’t have full knowledge, than the act itself and subsequent reception of Communion aren’t in fact mortal sins.

Unless you know it is a mortal sin, you cannot commit one. But if your conscience makes you feel the need, trust it and confess the communions (but maybe explain your un-surety), HOWEVER if this starts to be a really common thing (that is feeling frequent and numerous urgings to confess sins you aren’t 100% sure about, in this case specifically being hyper-worried about sacrilege against the Blessed Sacrament), TELL YOU CONFESSOR ABOUT IT because you may be developing scrupulosity which is a spiritual disorder that needs dealt with.

When you go to confession this Saturday, tell the priest the whole story, just as you told us. Ask him to help you form your conscience. Then you’ll know how to handle it if it ever happens again.

Be not afraid. These are the words of John Paul II and of Jesus Christ Himself. If you didn’t intentionally leave anything out of the confession, there was no sin. Discuss this with your confessor next time you go the confession.

****May the LORD bless you and keep you:
May the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you:
May the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Your brother in Christ

The Church teaches that you shouldn’t recieve Holy Communion if you are in a state of serious sin, not just mortal sin. Usually sins against the 6th comandment are serious by their very nature, because "All other sins you commit are outside your body, but if you sin sexually, you sin against your own body."1 Cor 6:18.

But don’t worry, Jesus is merciful and forgiving, He understands why you did what you did and He knows you are sorry. Go to confession and tell the priest. Just be straight with him, there’s no point you feeling guilty when you can have the freedom of Jesus’ forgivness in confession.

God bless you

ā€œIf we want to be saints, we should always be ready for two things; be ready to receive Holy communion and ready to die.ā€ St. John Vianney- The CurĆ© of Ɓrs
